I am new to image editing, so this might be a naive question.
In the exposure adjusting tools, there is a histogram on the top, another histogram under the levels adjusting. They are different? why? Do they mean different things?
    No - good question!
The histogram on the top refers to the output. E.g. if you set a different color space for output the top histogram changes. The second histogram in the tab "levels" is the input histogram.

If one is input, one is output, then they should be the same before any adjustment. But they are not.

They should be the same if you set "embed camera profile" as output in the batch tab.

I tried that, but they are still not the same.

Hi edb, I too liked your question and thowi's explanation as well. I think however that there is more applied than just a profile between input and output. I do not exactly know what, but a gamma curve comes to mind.

Did you set white balance to "as shot" and the film curve to "linear response"? In this case you should see (almost) the same histograms - maybe little differences but very very similar.

I tried that, yes, they are very similar now, especially toward the right end of the histogram, the left end still has noticeable difference.
