export variants have wrong color (+ more crap) when scaled
Hi
I've installed C1Express for Sony 9.1 in May, haven't used it much (I mostly used Darktable). Now I figured for some of my recent shots the cool HDR feature of C1Pro comes in handy. After I was happy with my results, I wanted to export the images to jpeg, to upload them to google photos (Shame already, that this cannot be done directly from C1Pro, even Darktable, a Opensource software(!), allows multiple online targets like flickr and more too).
So I chose 100dpi, max. size 1280x1280px JPEG with sRGB profile. Exported the files, and every file has a green hue AND it shows the white-point highlighted as magenta pixels = unusable! I figured I might have to upgrade to the recent version, so I did - installed v9.3, problem persists. Even when exporting to PNG. Then I disabled scaling, used original-resolution of source RAW file, and lo and behold - JPEG colors look okay, no white-point magenta color blotches. The size of those Images is useless for a web-export zhough! But luckily I know how to get them small enough myself in an automated fashion.
So from a, one click "export images to google" in Darktable, I went to exporting 24MP files to jpeg, lower their resolution in an extra step, and then manually upload those to google - It amazes me how C1Pro got the pro in its name, even the most basic step of exporting images does not work reliably or easily...

Your output recipe must be wrong. I export to 1280 and 1920 px size on a daily basis, and have experienced no such issues. 0 -
what recipe? Here is a screenshot of all options available (sorry german, but I guess you get the idea), I doubt any of those affects the magenta white-point problem for example.
Maybe this is a Problem that only shows with the express for sony version? I remember having the trial Pro back in May, the export worked.0 -
Output tab (the one with the cog wheel). That's where all the output recipes are, and where you can create your own. Maybe you should watch an introductory webinar on Phase One's YouTube channel.
I've used the Express for Sony version for months. No issue at all, it's the same app underneath.0 -
I watched all 3 intro videos on phaseones website and followed them to get to know the tools, I also found the "cog wheel" tab in the docs that supposedly should be of help - before posting here. But I don't have that, it is a limitation of Express. I only have 8 tabs while the screenshots in the online help have 12 - I don't have: the camera shaped one, the lens shaped one, the brush, the single cog-wheel and the 3 cog-wheels. But I do have one extra that looks like a Q, the quick access which can be added+customized in Pro.
The docs also confirm that - - the Output tab is a Pro only feature. Export works fine in full resolution of 6000x4000px but does not when scaled to smaller sizes for the Express version, this is a bug. This is true even if you consider this: There is an off-chance I might have configured some custom output when I still ran the test-pro version. This output setting might have stayed active when reverting to Express mode, that however does not explain why full-res output works fine, should be just as broken then.
Since you claim everything works fine, I kept fiddling with it and found a more crazy details of this bug:- It only happens when you use the HDR tool = slider highlights and shadows at non-zero value (funnily enough the reason why I used C1 in the first place, see my thread opening)
- It only happens when you do not significantly crop the image and export smaller than orig size.
Here are some of my findings (pictures start out at 6000x4000px, HDR used)- crop to 5900x3933 and export 1280x1280 = broken
- crop to 4500x3000 and export 1280x1280 = OK
- crop to 5900x3933 and export 100% = OK
- crop to 4500x3000 and export 100% = OK
- no crop and export 100% = OK
- no crop and export 1280x1280 = broken
I kept changing crop size, anything above 5100x3400px triggers it. So for example 5150x3433px and 1280 export = broken.
This clearly is a bug, not an easy one to trigger might I add. I looked at my old Session from May, by chance I only used HDR where I also cropped a lot, and did not use HDR for the uncropped pictures. Therefore I thought the Pro version back then worked fine - I hereby step back from that claim! Since the software is the same underneath, I am very certain this behavior exists in Pro version too, and it exists since at least version 9.1.
Thanks for your input, even though it really did not help my case 😉0 -

What if you revert to full pro trial for a test and process that image the same way again?
What if you switch off OpenCL?
You can define your favorite output recipes in the 'Output' tab, select those you want to use and process at any time using the cogwheel in the top right toolbar.
What if you create your recipe there and export using the 'Process' button in the 'Process Summary' tab or the cogwheel icon?
Maybe you can post final images/crops for showing the difference and an original for us to play with?
Cannot reproduce it in Pro with Canon raws, btw.

OK, you posted while I was writing. So some questions I've had in mind are already answered. And I didn't know some of the limitations of the Sony Express version.
For a bug, contact Phase One and file a support case. http://support.phaseone.com will take you directly to the support part.

I found the actual reason - OpenCL usage. I thought this may be related when I realized it is linked to source image size, therefore I disabled OpenCL for processing - but the bug kept existing. Then out of curiosity I disabled OpenCL for displaying images too - now the bug is gone (no green hue, no what seem to be magenta highlights/white-point markers - for any output).
I have a macbook pro 13" from 2015, that means Intel OpenCL. Looks like OpenCL is causing the problem for images with more than ~15MP.
hth somebody else, @phaseone I opened a ticket for that, please fix it somehow and maybe reward me with a Pro Sony License for hunting this bug down 😊0 -
