Why is Capture One Pro so expensive

CO Pro is so expensive because people are willing to pay $500 for a license. It's as simple as that. When Apple released Aperture at that price, people quickly figured out it wasn't worth it and a few weeks later the price was $299. Supply and demand.

If Pro is too expensive for you, use the very reasonably priced LE, or one of the many other converters you said are "comparable." As you pointed out, there are lots of choices.

Also, it borders on insane to suggest that Phase One should consider any sort of discount to RSP users because Adobe bought Pixmantec. Or maybe I just missed my crazy pill today...

And finally, this is a user forum. Just because moderators reply now and then doesn't mean Phase One is getting your message. Use the feedback option on the application or some other means to complain about the price of the application.

I am probably saying this because I paid so much for the C1 Pro...but maybe not. I know I like to play with about every software package out there and compare. I own RSP, Bibble, Silkpix, Photoshop, DPP and a few others. I never got into RSP because I never like the colors... without a lot of tweaking anyway. Bibble's interface was hard to get use to but does have a lot of functionality and it has finally improved enough that I am using it more and more. Now and then they all have their place.

Do I regret spending so much on Capture One, NO? I can process a group of pictures in far less time with a minimum of time getting what I want. On many of occasions I have spent a couple of minutes processing a few of my favorites with C1, then an hour or so with the others, printing and then having my family pick out there favorite. I would say, 8 out of ten times they pick the C1 processed.

With that said, I think Capture One needs to hurry with version 4. I think Bibble is right behind and catching up... love the Noise Ninja. I don't think Light Room is even in the running for a while. I personally feel that Capture One is ahead of the curve and will continue making my original investment well worth the cost.... CAPTURE ONE, DON'T LET US DOWN!

Of course, this is just my opinion and not shared by everyone.

Not quite as simple as that. When C1 was offered their Pro Version for 500$ or 625 € there was hardly any competition but now there is a lot of competition! Bibble Pro offers the same functionality as C1 Pro for a quarter of the price.

I'd be happy with the LE version if it had the same set of functions as RSP has, but it looks like they basically crippled C1-LE by removing basic functions to make people buy the overpriced Pro version. Phase One seems behind the market in my opinion.

I felt the urge to respond to this Post from personal opinions and experiences.
Please trust that I'm now wearing my Consumer Hat and not the Phase One Support one.

I would like to drive a BMW rather than a Kia for the same price… but this Ain’t Gonna Happen…

As with all studio equipment, you buy the best for the job using wise business decisions. It is a significant investment, but this is the cost of doing business in order to remain ahead of the competition.

There are plenty of studios who choose LE and use it with satisfaction without ever feeling forced to buy the PRO version. LE fits their needs and they’re content.
There are 2 versions because it offers a choice. Besides LE and PRO from Phase One, there are several other choices.
Just as in a restaurant, you can order a Hamburger or the Filet Mignon… everyone has their tastes and ability to choose.

The transition to digital presents the most important issue studios face. That is an efficient workflow.
Many studios who fail to establish an efficiency, soon go back to film or into early retirement.
Simply put, what is your time at the computer worth?
Why use 2, 3 or 4 programs prepping images for print or lab when you can use one?
What was the cost of all these other programs used?

When you shot film, did you buy expired or generic brand film?
Or did you purchase the best that was available because you wanted the best results from your camera?

There is not another program than can produce a better image quality from a DSLR RAW file than the algorithms and tools available in Capture One PRO.

Once you’ve invested a significant amount of money into a camera, I believe one should want the best possible images from that camera.

Many web sites and magazines have had side-by-side comparisons of the RAW programs available.
This is what I suggest to all those trying to decide. Test and compare yourself in order to make your own decision with confidence.
What most have found repeatedly is that Capture One outperforms the others.

The top reasons Capture One remains the choice of Professional Photographers is:
    1 – Superior Image Quality
    2 – Efficient RAW Workflow
3 – Color Management capabilities to achieve Dead-on color

It should be obvious then that Capture One actually Saves a studio lots of money.

Competition is good and all will benefit from the results.
However, the costs of improving software and striving for the lead have not gone down whatsoever.
Therefore, a reduction in pricing simply because there are other programs with reduced prices… again, ... Ain’t Gonna Happen

    Very Sincerely,
    k c

Superior workflow? Not sure. From what I've seen so far from LE version, RSP has a much better (simpler) workflow and more features than C1 LE: Rating, slideshow, storing correction file with image. RS/P looked like a workflow-improved C1-LE version.
I'd love to try the superior image quality. But so far I have just seen green cast images from my D200.

    Hi Matteo,

i had to buy the Pro version due to my choice of camera, I have look at other converters but somehow, I like driving the C1 and I do R/C for other Pro f otografers.
There is no doubt, C1 has its short comings but they are not in the raw conversion department AFAIK. and NO, it is not the fastest to convert, but the results are speaking for themselves, well worth the wait and the price of admission. You pay for steak and you get steak.

    kindest regards

    Henrik
