If you don't include the originals the image files will stay on the laptop. But then you could move the image folders by hand and reconnect them after you've imported the catalog on the desktop. That way at least your folder structure is being kept in case you have it organized in your own way.

I thought it would be possible to move the image folders directly between disks in Capture One but that is not being offered.

I assume you use the File > Export as Catalog function in CO8. Besides including the originals or not in the new created catalog, CO8 will mimic the current state of the image regarding to the catalog in the new catalog. In other words, fully managed images will remain fully managed, and referenced images will be referenced in the new catalog.

    2) When I did an import to my desktop, all my user collections from my laptop were not carried across. Is there a way around this?

How did you export and how did you import?
