C1 LE Mac - iptc disapearances?
I have just bought a copy of the Mac version of Capture One LE.
Much to my surprise, files that I've spent a long time putting in IPTC captions have all the ITPC fields stripped blank when the files are processed.
I organize my files based on renames that happen automatically using variables in two of the IPTC fields - so this is a disaster for me. I shoot events with upwards of 8,000 frames and the major part of my editing time goes into the captioning of the IPTC information so it's more important than processing time to not have it lost.
Is this a normal behavior for Capture one LE? I noticed that with the pro version that I had tested with there was no such problem.
If that is "the way it is" with LE 3.74 .... is there perhaps an older version that works properly this way - or is a fix in the works?
Thanks.

Known bug on intel macs. They're fixing it in 3.7.5. 0 -
Thanks ... I hope you are right about the fix. I'm running mine on a G5 so it's not just intel. I was wondering if it was only a C1 Pro "feature", something missing from the LE version by oversight or a bug. 0 -
It's still there in 3.7.7. And I am on a G5 Mac as well ... 0 -

We go with standardized xmp meta data in 4.0 .

Hi JRA,
That article you link to says "Products that modify the RAW file data are not supported in Capture One applications" and lists "iView Media Pro, Photo Mechanic, Nikon" as examples of applications. This is a bug with Capture One, not the other apps.

What do you mean by XMP: Adobe XMP sidecar files, IPTC Core, embedded XMP?
DNG is the only RAW format to support embedded XMP and consequently IPTC Core. Sidecar files are hell to deal with for proper asset management. From what I've read here with v4 you blokes are going to read Adobe DNG (great) but not write/output to DNG and you are working on another proprietary file format (not great) that embeds metadata including Capture One adjustments.
DNG works well with Adobe products and I appreciate the technical and commercial limitations the current specs place on companies like Phase One. If the Adobe DNG specs can't support your conversion algorithms perhaps look at influencing the ISO TC42 so the new TIFF/EP2 specs will work with your requirements. With the importance Phase One plays in electronic imaging you may well already have done so.

hi-
Phase One philosophy has always been to keep the RAW files completely intact and unaltered. Therefore, any program (as addressed in link) used that does alter a RAW file with IPTC data, will be unreadable with the current Capture One and not supported.
Barring speculation and rumours –(please read forum rule #2) , in 4.0- what we do know that we will have the ability to apply IPTC upon import. DNG support will be input and output.

Hi JRA,
Yes Photo Mechanic modifies the RAW file in a way typical for TIFF-EP. Camera Bits have contacted Phase One to inform you why Capture One is choking on the captioned files.
Surely Nikon can't be considered third-party for NEF files and iView uses Nikon software for embedding IPTC. Bottom line is all other RAW converters work with files that are annotated in the applications you list and pass the metadata.
[color=blue:2ucy0vip]what we do know that we will have the ability to apply IPTC upon import.[/color:2ucy0vip]
Please give users the choice of what apps we want to use for downloading and annotating. These areas are very specialised. As good as Lightroom is for downloading, annotating, backing up, applying settings, etc, there are better programs available.

Thankyou for confirming that JRA! For a Nikon user that is even better news than any D3 or D300 announcement.
All the best,
-- Robert.
Edit: When you output DNG please update the embedded thumbnail and fullsize JPEG preview with Capture One rendering.0 -

Amen to Robert's post...
This has been a huge issue for me as well.
I have been testing out the new beta an am disappointed that it cannot read the IPTC info that was stamped in via Photo Mechanic...oddly it does pass through a one of the fields (copyright) that was stamped into the photo, as well as reading the regular Camera EXIF info. But it does not read the caption (Description) or keyword fields.
This seems somewhat at odds with the statement that PhaseOne does not support files that have been "modified".
IPTC information is a crucial part of my organizations ability to feed 20 magazines with images and keep them archived. If I can find out the information that is embeded, I may as well have gone out shot the photos and thrown them in the trash because no one will be able to find them in my 3 Terrabyte server full of images!
I guess my concern with this approach of this notion of pristine files that are untouched as the only ones supported seems to be not listening to your end users needs. I feel we are not asking you to support files that have been modified, we only ask that you allow that information to be passed through in compliance with the IPTC standard (that's what we have standards for). If you want to add some IPTC/XML editor of your own, that's fine, but don't drive me away from your product because there is some official stance that "we only work with pristine untouched files" which is, to me, akin to a auto garage owner saying "we only work on new cars that haven't left the lot, not a car that has actually been out driving on the roads".
PLEASE help me keep my car on the road and not have to take some other highway (Aperature, Lightroom, etc) since I love this car and don't want to trade it in for a car that does what I need it to do.0 -
Hi Todd,
Please let me play devil's advocate. Photo Mechanic (which I use) does modify proprietary RAW files in undocumented, unsupported ways. However we now have the option in PM4.3.2 to make and append (Adobe) XMP sidecars leaving the files "virgin".
Phase One have said Capture One 4 will support XMP (sidecars?). Maybe, hopefully, they will read and pass XMP sidecar files. As a bare minimum Capture One must honour embedded metadata that was annotated in a support way. i.e. by the camera manufacturers software - which includes their SDK.
