Please support initiative Capture One file backup

I'd prefer to trust a backup software specialist (trusty old Macrium Reflect hereabouts) to do its specialist job. Whereas C1 is not a file management specialist so I'd rather not (have to) trust them in that field. Horses for courses. FWIW I still use that old SyncToy (circa 2009) thing to do my manually invoked file sync - on demand. It's hard to beat for plain old quick and dirty.

As we all know, C1 offers a backup facility for the settings. But not for the actual files. I use third party software to synchronize my files to an external NAS and hope I never have to use this because it is not standard C1 practise so I am sure that problems will arise. Wouldn’t we all be a big supporter if this is embedded (f.i. by OEM) in C1? It is an essential of a real professional software solution and really contributes to peaceful night rest.

    Please offer support.

I do not support your suggestion. There are many trustworthy products on the market that do it better now and in Capture One's future. Backing up is not an application's task. If each program I use on my computer would have its own backup service and schedule, my digital life would quickly become a big mess. Backing up is a system task.

Phase One should not (and I am sure never will) use their limited and valuable resources for such a feature. There are hundreds if not thousands tasks with higher priority on their list.

The fact that Capture One provides a database backup that is easy to setup is convenient and allows you to back up it frequently to safeguard the (catalog's) nervous system.

    Ok, My take on this:

When using catalogs anything in the catalog directory should be backed up if it cannot be re-generated. So if you are using managed files, these should be backed up. But previews do not need to be as they can be recreated. If using reference files, then no these should be backed up by another program. This is how Aperture works on the mac, and it works well. I know currently this would not work well as CO creates a new backup every time it does a backup and trying to save all the files every time you closed the program would not work. CO would have to go to a single backup location, that is incrementally updated.

Now, coming from the Mac where the Catalog directory is a "Package" and you have to explicitly tell the finder/explore that you want to enter the package this even makes more sense.

Do I see CO/Phaseone doign this no.

    Hi,

For me it is fine that the catalog and adjustments are backed up, my images are kept elsewhere and have their own backup procedure as they only need to be backed up one time and NEVER get changed.

Maybe having the current backups compressed would be a good idea 😄

Well... what I really would like is for C1 to connect to the API supplied by f.i. dropbox or Google drive. The API is there for free and for C1 not a great effort to connect to. So it will cost you $15 per month. But just imagine: all your work synchronized real time to the cloud and, if you want, to a second device. per session you can distribure rights to f.i. a retoucher, a client.
    Greetings to all:
    Chris

I subscribe to Google Drive (1TB) and keep all of my images, Capture One folders etc. within the Google Drive folder.

In this way all of my images and Capture One files are backed up automatically without myself having to do anything.
