    An easy one.

    + Edit all variants 'on',
    + Select all images,
+ Click 'Upgrade' in 'Base Characteristics' - 'Engine'.

But watch out! It may change the look of adjusted images dramatically!
That's the reason why it isn't done automatically.

but I have the "Upgrade" button. It shows that the engine is Capture One 10 but only one of the images has been upgraded to Capture One 10 engine. The rest of them are sill on Capture One 9 engine.

Typo: it's 'Edit all selected variants' 'on'.

'Edit All Selected Variants' must be 'on'.

By "on" do you mean having a check mark next to "Edit All Selected Variants"? If so I do have it on.

I closed and reopened and now it's working, thanks!

In the tool bar at the top right of of Capture One is an icon with 3 stacked squares. That toggles between 'Edit Primary Variant' and 'Edit Selected Variants'. When it is orange it is set to edit all selected variants. I believe this is what Hans was referring to.

This doesn't work for me again. I have the stacked squares highlighted in orange and now I'm trying to change curve on all the images and only the first selected image changes. What am I doing wrong?
Here is a video showing what I'm doing:

CO doesn't adjust all files simultaneously. But it will apply the adjustments to all selected if you choose to.

For all tools: Make your change, then
+ click the double arrow and choose 'Apply' to apply all selected, or
+ <SHIFT> + click the double arrow of the tool you are using to apply to all selected, or
+ click the double arrow, 'Copy' to adjustment clipboard, and use the big apply arrow in the top right of the window.

Ahh thank you I keep forgetting that! But I can select all images and hit A button to simultaneously apply auto adjustments and that works. I guess that's why I expect other functions to behave the same

Anything where the result is a single calculation of setting (rating, colour) or a known set of adjustments (copy one set of edit instructions and apply to a selection of images) or just an instruction to C1 to do its thing (Auto Adjustment) can be run as what is effectively a "batch".

However if you are likely to be editing and changing values in sliders many times over a period of seconds, minutes of hours the overhead of making changes and tryinig to work on all files at once - possibility for a lot of too-ing and fro-ing adjustments as you try and get things to appear as you want them to - would be a potentially huge overhead for the system. So edit one, copy and apply to many is the approach adopted.

    HTH.

So Grant, then what is the purpose of the stacked icon? If adjustments only apply to the variant being worked on whether the icon is toggled or not, and if other variants are also selected or not, it seems more intuitive to then simply click an "Apply to selected" option. Having to also toggle the stacked icon seems like an added superfluous step.

    Alan,

You would have to ask the developers that question.

However if you think of is as a kind of "mode", consider this.

You can set the mode "on", work on one image, get the result you want to apply to all and then simply Copy and Apply to the already selected group of images.

Or, if you are doing some sort of rating exercise, and have select a number of images for a rating or colour tag but then change your mind about some of them but don't want to deselect them, you can simply come out of "Edit All" mode temporarily (keyboard hot key combo available), make the change, and then return to edit all once again.

The same would apply when deciding to cull an image during a rating process.

It's really just a different approach, compared to other applications, to doing what you suggested and rather useful once you have worked out how you can deploy it.

Alternatively if you approach your rating or editing work from a different angle and don't find it to be a benefit I'm sure you will be able to work out how to do what you want to do without worrying about it.
