Image appears very posterized

I have an image shot in low light, when I begin to increase the exposure or the HDR shadow slider it begins to look like a posterize effect has been applied. Opening in CS5 ACR 6.1, the image processes better w/out this effect. Could I post here for advice on how to avoid this surreal affect? And what really makes this worse is when the White Balance tool is applied lowering the WB setting to more "blue" temperature.

  I have found the cause of the issue: The Noise Filter with regards to "Color" is causing the issue. By reducing it, or completely removing it, my images are now appearing as I would expect.

  Doug,
  The higher the ISO the more aggressive the Noise Reduction.
  The lower the light (underexposed) the more noise, the more aggressive the Noise Reduction.
  
  By simply reducing the Noise Reduction, as suggested by YLWDOG, the less detail is swallowed by the Noise Reduction and the better the image. This does, however come at a cost of introducing some aspect of noise back into the image but with the added tools in Capture One 5 the results are quite nice.
