Upgrade what happens to activation count?

    Ian,
Answer to your question depends from which release and version you are upgrading. You either upgrade from CO 3 Pro or from CO 4 (non-Pro) to CO 4.5 Pro. It might also be relevant/different whether you were using CO 4 with a CO 4 license or a (CO 3) Pro license because the activation counts against a license.

CO 3 can not be de-activated from within the application, where CO 4 can. In general for upGRADE: de-activate beforehand. In general for upDATES: remain activated.

Last but not least, you can manage your licenses and activations from Phase One's web site. Login with your credentials, go to My Account, License Management and reset your activation if necessary.

    Hi Paul,
thank you for taking the time to answer.

I am fully aware of the on-line activation/de-activation. I was able to recover my system by de-activating a lot of dead installations.

I have CO 4.1 and was interested in whether I had to de-activate to retain the current licence count or would CO 4.5 Pro write over the top and not increase the licence count.
That isn't clear to me in any of the FAQs I read on similar subjects.

    From the release notes:
    Installation
If you previously have installed versions of Capture One 4 on your computer we recommend that you
start by uninstalling these before you install this version of Capture One 4. If you want to keep your
existing versions of Capture One 4 you can install this newer version of Capture One 4 in a different
location. Image settings made with older versions of Capture One 4.x can be used in the newer
Capture One 4.5, but the opposite is not the case.........

As far as I could tell removing 4.1 left the license info intact. I didn't have to do anything in that regard.
( though I did have to go back to 4.1 because of crash issues with 4.5 )

    Hi Steve,
thank you. What operating system are you using? I am using Vista ultimate 64 and don't want to load Pro if there are issues with one particular operating system.

You can install and run CO 4.5 on Vista x64. However, tethered operation is not supported on x64 (either XP or Vista).

    Thanks guys,
I have installed 4.5 on Vista 64 with 8gb of ram. I haven't tried tethered since just after I installed a very early version of C1, my 10D and a laptop, sometime late in 2003.

Now off to read some other threads to answer some of my other questions that aren't answered in the install facts doc.
