Clarity + Loupe = CRASH

I have just started using 9.1 on a late 2013 Mac Pro, 16G memory, and have repeatedly had the following sequence hang and then crash my system. Select loupe, zoom, then select and slide Clarity. Any help would be appreciated.

    And following up, attempting to use the Loupe at all just resulted in a state where the application is not active, per the menu bar, but cursors and tools can be selected, and yet nothing happens...until a crash occurs. Frankly, I have never seen a program act this squirrely, and I have only just begun using version 9.1.
