Noise, detail and other converters

Hi,

I've been very happy with C1 for a couple of years now, but having acquired a Sony A700 I seem to be noticing a noise pattern in my shots now which C1 struggles to deal with. This image shows the problem, a quite fine grained pattern across the frame, but one which is distracting and disappointing to me (note this was the best result I could obtain with C1):


Next, for comparison here is another shot processed in C1 and another RAW converter. C1 has more noise, but also keeps a little more fine detail. The other converter lags slightly on detail, but the noise is much less noticeable.

So, can anything be done to improve C1's ability to tidy up this noise, or is this the price of the detail? With rumours of v5 (which I think I'll have to pay for), I'm quite conflicted about whether to stick with C1 or buy another package which deals with the noise better.

  I think it would have been more interesting if you would have posted a comparison with the other raw converter of the first image with the yellow flowers. This is because this is the image were you get disappointed about CO4 and it is a ISO 400 image, where the other (leaves against sky) are ISO 200.
  
  More details = more noise? Probably so yes. Note that a common statement is that there is no single best raw converter. Depending on your taste and preferences, you might find one better suited in one occasion (CO4 with low ISO, preserve find detail) and another converter in another situations.
  
  Keep up to date with CO4, details are improved every release. Experiment with different noise settings per ISO setting on your camera.
  New version (v5): that is noise for me.

  if you will start dealing w/ noise in SilkyPix than you have a not slight, but noticeable loss in details... at least in v3.x, did not have a chance to try new v4.x editions

  C1 has more noise even in ISO 100 than other converters, BUT it has more details as well. I prefer C1, especially if I sharpen in C1. If I sharpen later in other software I get more noise.
  Other software looks more processed than C1 even at ISO 100.

  Not in my experience - I routinely recommend C1 over any other converter because of its excellent noise handling characteristics, especially at higher ISOs where as far as I'm concerned it has no equal.

  to the OP: My camera is an Sony A700 either and I see the "noise" pattern too - on screen.
  There has been a lot of discussion on several forums whether this is a real issue or if it is much more a phenomeon of screen visualization at high magnification rate but with no, or very small relevance actually for the (large) printed ouput. Up to now my take is that C1 struggles perhaps with the "view" of the patterns in the image files because the prints are fine.

  Actually, C1 adds noise to a TIFF with rgb 10.10.10. Try it yourself 😉
