Some More Thoughts On 4.0
I have processed well over 200,000 images with 3.7 Pro. I have processed about 2000 images with 4.0. While it isn’t nearly as many as in 3.7, I should think that 2000 images is enough to know what I like and what I don’t care for in 4.0. I am posting this mostly to see if others have similar impressions, or if other people have figured out some of the things that have been a source of frustration for me. It’s hard to know if the things I don’t like are things that are bugs (inconsistent behavior), or if they are things that will be different in the Pro version (detachable windows for focus and for rotation, for example). I do know that it is taking me about 50% longer to get through my images with 4.0 and that is something that I do not like; and largely attribute to some of the items on my list of things that I do not like about 4.0.
What I like:
1. The shadows tool.
2. Better use of undo’s and resets within the tools.
3. “100% focus†and “fit to window†buttons.
4. The ability to set background color.
5. Auto exposure.
6. Scrolling mouse adjusts most sliders.
What I do not like:
1. Copy and apply adjustments is not nearly as good or appealing as it is in 3.7. In 4.0 now when you apply adjustments to a series of images, those images are “locked inâ€. If one of those “locked in†images is one you want to now copy to apply to other images, you have to click all around to “release†that image . . a real pain. Plus in 3.7 you did not have to click a “copy†button. I believe that copy and apply adjustments in 4.0 needs some serious attention in order to bring back how great it was in 3.7.
2. The crop tool to me seems difficult to use at times. It doesn’t always consistently grab when I want it to. I like some of the feel and look of it, but it seems kind of temperamental. I also miss the pulldown crop ratio window in the 3.7 toolbar.
3. I still believe the tool “grabbers†are too small and slow in response. The levels tool for example is not as responsive to grab as it is in 3.7 or in Photoshop. Always feel like I am fighting to grab the sliders.
4. No processing status in the main window.
5. No total image count in the main window.
6. No indication on thumbnail that an image has already been processed.
7. No ‘create new folder†when you go to pick processing folder.
8. Several times when I tried to delete a highlighted image, it didn’t delete; but whatever my mouse happened to be on at the time (Kelvin #, for example) goes to zero. That never happened in 3.7.
9. Some of the tool windows (Kelvin #, for example) turn white when highlighted (or even when I am not highlighting them) and I cannot read the actual number in that window. Again this doesn’t happen all the time.
Again, some of the things I miss from 3.7 are things related to the Pro version, so I am not mentioning those since this is not the Pro version of 4.0. I’m just hoping that Phase One is listening and are in the process of tweaking, improving, and correcting these things.

I've read a few people comment on how they don't like the newer way of copying adjustments, and I must say, when I first was getting used to it I didn't like it very much either, but after understanding how it works, I like it so much better than the old way.
In the 3.7 it used to really annoy me that you always had to have the image selected to apply it's adjustments to other images. This often meant scrolling up and down the thumbnail several times to find the image with the look you wanted to use, scroll around to find one you wanted to apply to, scroll back to the other one, select it, etc... It also meant you couldn't copy the settings of one image and apply it to an image in a different folder. Which seems like a simple thing, but wasn't possible at all (without some playing around in finder behind the scenes) until they included the styles feature. Also, there wasn't isn't even a keyboard shortcut for apply adjustments in 3.7. You always have to go in to the menu, then hit OK on the dialog box of settings check marks.
Now, in v4, I can select an image, hit Apple-Shift-C, select another image, hit Apple-Shift-V. Adjustments copied in a split second. Then I can just jump to another folder after that and just hit the paste command again, without having to go back to my original image, because now v4 stores the adjustments in the clipboard, which IMO is a much better way of doing this. And before I copy, if I WANT to I can look at the adjustments panel and uncheck some settings that I don't want it to copy, but I'm not forced to go through that step like in 3.7, if I don't need to.0 -
I'm not totally against the new system, and if it works better for your particular workflow then that is fine. I personally have little if any need to use adjustments and settings from one image in one shoot and apply that to another image in another shoot. (I tried that years ago with Photoshop ACR and found it to be kind of inconsistent anyhow). And maybe I'm missing something here, but if you have 1000 images and you are working on image #250 and want to apply adjustments you made on image #150 to #250, don't you still have to scroll and find that image to 1) copy it's adjustments, and 2) know which image it was that you wanted to use (#150 vs #149)?
This new system generally works the same as in 3.7. I don't like how the images get locked in when you apply adjustments, and how you apparently have to select another image outside those "locked" images in order to "unlock" them. I would also like to see a bit stronger identifier on selected images than the rather thin white line.
I suppose some of these things might be considered things to just get used to, and maybe that is the case. But I for one am hoping that 4.0 as is is not a final version and that Phase One is listening and looking for ways to make 4.0 a better product. I think a lot of people would agree that there is much room for improvement.0
