Generic Profiles for D800 are poor
I use C1 primarily teathered to a D800. When I copy paintings, I use an SG digital colour checker to make my camera profile. The [in camera] software shows me that the Generic profile has its contrast ramped up and that colour is skewed. Even when I set exposure to 243 RGB units from the colour checker, detail in the 243 plus range looks clipped using the C1 supplied profiles. When I use my profile all the image detail appears as it should. When I toggle back to the supplied profile I see just how poor it is.
My problem is that the In Camera profile is very exposure dependent. It works with copy work but not with product lighting or other types of photography. I am back to the DNG workflow instead of capture 1... What can be done about building better Capture 1 Pro profiles?

First step is to tweak the Capture One profiles. You can use the Color Editor for that. In short the workflow is:
In Color Editor (best to use the Advanced editor) make your color adjustments. I suggest to save them as presets first.
When you are happy with some presets, apply them to one image and save the result as a new camera profile. Now, when applying the new profile (you can make it the default profile for your camera) you can leave alone the presets.
Repeat the process to further finalize your result.
Another approach is that you describe your profiling process with the SG card and wait for others to share theirs. I have the same color chart and Profilemaker Pro 5 and had miscellaneous results (similar to your findings).0 -
C1 is, in my "humble opinion" the best raw processing software, but the default profiles are default profiles!
The boxes have their own rendering and no software can claim to make the best profile "generic" this is why we can and should create a specific profile are or boxes.
SG card is a great tool, it must be after reading software patch to create the profile. I remain at your disposal!

Actually my findings are that the Pictocolor In Camera profiles are really very good especially copying artwork. Bang on!
I guess I need to get better with the Color editor in C1. It seems a bit unnatural so far. So you are saying use it as a starting point. Okay.
It also needs to be a tone editor independent of hue and saturation. And if it could adjust mid tone contrast.
I guess my issue is that it needs to be less pushing sliders around. Which is quite subjective and not too scientific.0
