Switching from LR, need to import date-arranged folders
Hello all;
I've used Lightroom for several years, but after a series of incidents with LR and its failure to keep the database intact, I decided to switch to CaptureOne for Mac. LR's push for cloud-based processing was also a big factor.
Using a MacPro5,1 with photos stored on external eSATA drives. Each drive will have it's own separate catalog. Each drive is organized by year, with sub-folders by MM-DD-YY - <description>. My intention is to create a catalog that follows that convention.
So far I have not been successful. Instead of creating subfolders that follow the structure of the source, I end up with a single set of individual photos in a giant, uncategorized list - none of the folder structure is retained. That is, unfortunately, not usable.
I see in the Import dialog that subdirectories can be created either manually (not feasible with thousands of folders involved) or automatically based on varius metadata.
My question then, at long last, is how can I Import in one pass, all of my photos, with the folder structures intact? Since metadata is file-, and not folder-based, I need a way to tell CaptureOne to create the Year folder, then each subfolder based on it's current name, with contents of each subfolder intact and separate from other photos. I'm sure I''m missing some subtle detail of how to do that.
Thanks in advance for any nudges in the right direction.

Hi Tim,
I switched from LR to C1 about 2 years ago, and I had the same problem. I have the same folder hierarchy in my external HDD as yours, i.e. year - 4 months - description (example : 2012 -> 0104 -> Japan). And I have just created a catalog based on this folder hierarchy by clicking on "Folders" -> "Show folders hierarchy".
If the images are not located (sort of warning sign close to the folder), you have to locate them by right clicking on the parent folder, and it should work. Depending upon the answer of the software, you might also need to synchronise the folders.
From then, I have created albums (smart or not) for specific uses.
Cheers,

Thanks for the quick reply, Robert
Does this work in the case where you wish to keep the photos in their current location? That seems to be where the instruction go off the track.
I do not see Folders > Show folder Hierarchy

Here it is:

With this way of proceeding, it always keep your images in the current location (Folders). But you might have to synchronise.0 -
Sorry, cannot see image in your reply. 0 -
You right click on it and then "open image....". 0 -
No matter how I start the import, I end up with images only, no subfolders.
There has to be a simple way to do this while leaving the images inn place.0 -
You don't have to import in that case, you just have to synchronise once your folders are displayed in your library. A window will open and tell you that C1 will import a certain number of pictures. 0 -
On my latest attempt, it looks like it might be working, although the speed is versy slow - may be a day or two at this rate.
Thanks for all the info!0 -
I'm glad it works !!
The time needed depends upon the number of images you have. When I switched from LR to C1, I imported my catalog of about 15,000 images, and it took a full night. Don't stop the process, otherwise you could miss pictures or get a corruption of the catalog.0 -
I went through this process a few weeks back only with 53,000 images, it took over three days. But that is not the worst thing, Just when I thought everything was ok, I tried to open the catalog and got a database error, all that time was wasted.
I have now decided to rethink my use of Capture One. I don't trust it to manage a catalog of images unless it is very small. It's too slow and cumbersome.
I now use three programs together:
1- Photo Mechanic - importing, culling, adding metadata. This offers near instant image previews and much better management of metadata.
2- Capture One - I create a session for the import, NOT a catalog. This works brilliantly. Edits, crops and outputs.
3- Neofinder - This is the catalog part. I move the entire session folder to an external drive into a YYYY-MM-DD system. Neofinder is way better than either Capture One or Lightroom at cataloging items and much, much faster. It takes minutes rather than days.
Finally, my Mac and the external drive gets backed up to the cloud using Backblaze.0
