Antivirus problems?
I am one of these people who just WANTS Media Pro to be a good piece of software and has invested a lot of time in unsuccessfully willing it to do what it simply doesn't. But in the process, after updating yesterday and giving it yet another shot because I love Capure One and I desperately want Photo Mechanic out of my workflow, I found out what caused Media Pro to consistently crash out of of big indexing jobs on both my machines. It was AVG constantly verifying the writes. I was surprised to find no reference to this on the forum here, but I may have overlooked something, in which case I apologise.
Sadly I found out only when I gave up once more and installed a trial of IdImager, which after installlation pops up a large window saying: "Make sure to make an exception for the catalog directory in your antivirus program." Instead of being grateful to IdImager for that clear hint and peeved off that Media Pro had never told me this so clearly, I went back to Media Pro and made an exception in AVG Pro for the Media Pro catalog folder.
It did work. For the first tikme since I installed it, Media Pro no longer hangs while indexing. It did on both my machines earlier. That's a lesson to Phase One too: make it more clear to people installing Media Pro that antivirus programs may jeopardise the work of Media Pro.
I just thought I'd make that a clear topic here.

That said, it is still excruciatingly slow, having worked since last night 2am (11 hours now, 800 files to go, and yes I have triple checked all the settings and no I am not rendering media previews, just 160px thumbnails) to process my test folder with 6000 images (my whole catalog is to be 120.000!). That took IdImager about an hour without making other use of the computer impossible in the meantime. Media Pro has been hogging all resources since last night and I am still working on a different computer.
I know computer specs mean a lot, but this machine is a Vaio Z series with an i7 CPU and 16GB of RAM. Sure, there is better out there, but this should be good enough.
It's such a shame because on paper the combo Capure One / Media Pro was so promising. I truly hope they're seriously rewriting code at Phase One and we soon get a version 2.0 - no 1.4 - with a free loyalty upgrade for all of those who (silly, I admit) paid for software because they believed in the company publishing but that they simply could not use, however much they wanted.
Back to Photo Mechanic for speed and my retarding memory and intricate folder structure for 'cataloguing' photographs ... sigh 😊

Do you use P1 rendering engine or WIC based rendering in MediaPro? When I switched off the P1 rendering and changed to WIC with FPVC (FastPictureViewerCodec) for thumbnail generation the import in MediaPro was drastically faster and much more stable.
Thanks for the antivirus tip for MP. I also use IDI and never made any modificaton to my Avira Antivirus configuration. Should I try this for IDI and MP? Up to now I was happy, but may be there is potential for further improvement!
Currently my combination and workflow with IDI and C1 is wonderful. I am using separate working directory for C1 files with symbolic link directories and with this no subfolders and files of C1 are "disturbing" my photo collection. The complete set of C1 working files is on a separate drive/folder and can be backed up independantly.0 -
Interesting to hear how you work with the two. Also a good hint on the rendering setting. I set it to P1 as I thought it only affected raw files and I haven't even begun doing anything beyond my archives of output files, which are mostly JPG and contain no raw files. My raws are on a (wireless) network, so I can only imagine how much time that would take.
Re Avira, the logic should be simple: if your antivirus monitors all file writes it will hurt a large rendering operation. How much will depend largely on how much is writtten (e.g. to temporary files). But surely it won't hurt to give the folder an exception in Avira and see what happens. After all, this is not going to be your most virus sensitive directory.
Do remember to write if you notice considerable change.0 -
Update:
I actually need to switch off AVG altogether. Just the exception of the catalog folder is not enough. So it probably writes temp files to other directories. Speed increases from rendering around 6 files per minute to more than 100.0
