Media reader finds wrong files
1) Sometimes the Media Reader doesn't start when I insert my media (flash card). Why not?
2) Today Media Reader found the files (including .log .sys .swf .bat .jpg .htm. gif .dat .chm files) on the root directory of my C drive (not the files on my flash card) and put them all in the folder I had designated, and did not rename them. It simpy copied all of the wrong files to the designated folder on my 'I' drive, where I wanted the correct files from my flash card.
3) How do I extract the jpgs that the Canon 20d embeds into the raw file (not the extra jpg added to it, but the jpg embeded into the CR2)? (I've had no problem extracting the jpgs with BreezBrowser.)
Canon 20d, raw+jpg, PC w/750mg ram, 120 gig C drive + 120 gig additional drives.
I have 5 days left on the trial of C1 LE.
Any help?
Walt B

waltb,
CF card must be formatted in MS-DOS and have the DCIM subfolder in order for the Capture One Media Reader to launch.
Suggest shooting RAW only setting in-camera. If you need JPEGs, you can Process or use the QuickProof to generate better JPEG images.
Sincerely,

Thanks Keith,
I format the CF card before each use by the Canon 20d, and the camera creates the DCIM file. Normal operating procedure. I will try it with the RAW only setting. But my short trial period is ending.
So, C1 does not extract the jpgs embedded in the CR2 raw images, and instead I use QuickProof to make fresh jpgs? That sounds slower.

WB,
Your Formatting sounds good and yes, standard.
You got me puzzled with the system files issue. Is it possible you had a DCIM folder on your local C: ?
The basic process is a System Event launches first, and then looks for a DCIM folder to download image files.
If you set your Canon to capture RAW + JPEG, then the JPEGs should be there in the folders too. The embedded JPEG is what is displayed on your camera for reviewing images and such. I suspect this file is also displayed in the Canon browsing software as well.
If the JPEGs are truly for reference then it likely does not make a difference. However, if the JPEGs are for proofs or other printing or display, then the JPEG images from QuickProof tool will be a better quality. The QuickProof algorithm is built for Speed and is the fastest RAW conversion there is. The algorithm at the Process tab is built for image quality.
15 Day Trial is for the LE version. You can Trial the PRO version for 30 Days without limitations, i.e. tethering with your 20D directly into Capture One.
Cheers,

Hi Keith,
I don't want to prolong this unnecessarily, but I am interested in CI as it does have some great management features for raw files, and I'm having a couple of difficulties that make a couple of those features not available.
FYI, BreezeBrowser extracted 104 embedded jpgs from the raw files to my hard drive in 55 seconds, averaging 300kb in size, enough for projection to sell from and also for a good 5x7 paper proof, which I sell in sets of 30 as an add-on sale. I can't test the speed of the QuickProof feature as I didn't realize that was the process needed until the trial expired. But it is bound to be slower as it must convert the actual large RAW file to jpg. I guess speed isn't everything, but Canon has helped us by giving a good jpg in the RAW file, it would be nice if C1 could use it. But there is still BreezeBrowser to use for that. And I like to keep the file size to about 300kb each for quicker presentation. I'm able to sell larger wall portraits projecting this file size.
I don't know how or why Media Reader copied the files (not folders nor the contents of any folders) from my C drive acting like it was my CF card. But the ability to copy CR2 files from the DCIM folders on my CF card is a slick feature that I would want to know works reliably. As you suggested above, I've searched all my hard drives, and the only DCIM files on my local C drive are for Phase 1 (DCIMImp.exe and dciman32.dll). Otherwise they appear on my CF cards only.

If I read your post literally, then Speed is more important than Quality; and you only capture RAW image files for the potential large wall portrait sale. If in-camera processed JPEG files are good enough for you / your customers, then I would agree that you don’t need Capture One. The comparison between an in-camera processed JPEG and a JPEG derived from a RAW file is quite clear with the latter having superior image quality. Capture One is for studios wanting complete control over image processing from WB, Color Management, Exposure, Sharpening, etc.. It is also for studios with demanding customers in regards to image quality, and these tend to be commercial markets.
The Phase One Media Reader had some problems when first released in version 3.6
The problem you describe would lead me to look for an issue at the System level. If it persisted, I would completely Uninstall and clean Reinstall. Since the release of v3.7 last May, there has not been one Support Case involving this tool whatsoever.

Keith, I appreciate your complete and honest answers.
Image quality is very important for the finished work, less so for the projected jpgs "proofs." I will try the QuickProofs.
I have uninstalled the trial version, reinstalled it, and purchased the key. I look forward to the simplification in the workflow that C1 will allow me.
Thanks again.
