What pixel size are you images? Are they JPG or raw?

Disconnect the drive from your computer and then look at your catalog and see if you see thumbnails?

I have had some odd behavior with trying to do things with some images and for me, at times it was tied to issues CO was having with creating thumbnails.

Also when you bring up a photo in the viewer, do you see "OffLine" at the top of the image?

if not, see if thumbnails show when the drive is not connected and other than that, right click on the photo and select rebuild previews. Which depending on now many photos you have, may take a while.

Yes, they're RAW files from a Sony A7III. But the issue only happened after I upgraded. There was no issue with 11.

When I disconnect my drive, I do see a blurred out image in the viewer but not the thumbnails. After I disconnect, I also see text on the image the says, "The selected image is either unavailable or[...]"

It does not say OFFLINE at the top of the image. I'm also able to right click on the image and Show in Finder, so it's definitely not offline.

I regenerated previews as well, and that didn't help.

Thanks for your suggestions! Hope I can find a solution!

This is similar to the issue I had.But also different.

First, I know you said when you try refine mask you get the error. If you double click on the photo, the photo opens up correct? How many photos are in your catalog?

    What I would recommend doing,

    With your drive connected.
You already rebuilt the previews. In CO 12, press command-option V to bring up the browser view. Shrink the size of the thumbnail previews.

Once the browser comes up, it may scroll through the images as it fills the browser page. Let it sit there for a minute to fully generate the thumbnails in the viewer mode. Then scroll down and do the same with the next set of images. Then after the thumbnail images display, then try to open the image and try the refine mask command.

Also another thing you can try,

in the tools, click on library, under folders, look for your folder with your photos. A folder with photos that your trying to view, Right click on that folder, select locate and then choose the folder for these pictures, then see if you can open the photos and do the refine mask.

With your drive not connected and not seeing thumbnails so the thumbnails are not generating, which is one of my problems.

    Another thing you can try,

Locate the catalog file on your drive,

Right click on it and choose show package contents.

Open up the folder that says Cache. In there you should see a folder called previews.
Right click on the previews folder and choose Get Info.

Look to see how many files it finds in the previews folder.

It should be 3x your photo count.

If you had 1000 photos, it should say there are 3,000 files.

Capture One generates a folder for each photo preview, and two files for the preview, so each photo has the two files in the folder which counts for the 3x.
If you do not see 3x. Then there is a problem with your previews generating.

If you right click on the thumbnails folder and choose get info. The file count should match your photo count. So 1,000 photos should show 1,000 thumbnails In that folder.

A general remark. Please do a Verify Catalog before and after you upgrade.

I'm not sure what you mean by general remark. I did Verify Catalog. Still has the same issue.

What's interesting is I am able to feather the mask, invert the mast, rasterize it, every other option except refine. It really feels more like a bug than anything else.

I can't say I discovered the root of the issue, but I found a solve. Here's what I did to make it work...

I was using the Session workflow and after I updated to 12, I wasn't able to Refine Mask. Again, I had no other issues.

I created a new Catalog and imported all my original Raw files. Luckily, all the edits I'd made in the Session were carried over into the new Catalog. Refine Mask now works!

So, I went ahead and tried creating a new Session and it also worked!

So for anyone else having weird issues after updating, try creating a new Session or new Catalog and hopefully, your issues might be solved.
