Image file + CO's adjustment file (.cos) + compression = EIP file. You can manually and automatically pack/unpack to/from EIP during import or later. See preferences, Image tab.

EIP files are a great way to simplify the sharing of your RAW files between your own computers or to other users (digital tech) so that they include your RAW adjustments. When you import into C1, any adjustments you make to the image are stored as a preference in a different folder to the RAW image and if you want your adjustments to be applied to the RAW file on a different computer you also have to provide the settings file. You or the other user must then put the settings and RAW file in their correct folders of it doesn't show your adjustments.

To simplify the matter phase created .EIP so that all the adjustments preferences are wrapped up with the RAW file as a single .eip file. Drop into the capture folder of import in to C1 and everything works and your adjustments are displays without having to rummage through directories on your computer.

As Paul stated there is a preference to pack files as EIP on import. If you don't want this to happen just uncheck this option. You can pack or unpack your RAW files at any point with the command under the file menu or with a "ctrl" click on the image in the browser.

Very cool. Can other programs such as PS read eip files?

That where lies the problem with .eip files. They very much depend on use within the Phase One eco system (Capture One/Media Pro) and whoever you share the file with must use Phase software.

A real shame IMO its not more of a standard because it works exceptionally well.

It would be nice to go to Nik, OnOne, or Ps from within C1 and apply a preset or macro without having to output the image. Has PhaseOne given consideration to working with OnOne or Nik to make their programs interface with C1?

As a digi tech, I tend to use .eip files a lot. They are basically just a zip file (RAW file + settings file) by another name and can be uncompressed using any unzip utility (you might have to rename to .zip to enable the unzipping). HTH.

But you still need to be using Phase software to interpret any adjustments made to the RAW image.

True, but how could it be otherwise? For example, +20 Highlight Recovery in C1 is not the same as +20 Recovery in ACR/Lightroom...

Because your above post suggests you can unzip the .eip file to gain access to the original files and confuse people into thinking you could add the RAW and adjustment files into other programs. Unzipping the .eip for the majority of people and situations is a pointless exersise as the .eip or unzipped settings file can only be interpreted using Phase software. So to be clear, sending someone an .eip file to unzip for use in Photoshop therfore would be a waist of time and there are much better ways to share files in those situations.
