Noise reduction in C1Pro - is it just me or...?

Is it largely ineffective?

I've used noise reduction on Lightroom and it's amazing. I think the Phase One team would do well to invest in improving this feature of Capture One Pro.

    You do need to inspect the image at 100% to see the effect of the NR and some other things. Check at 100% before concluding it isn't working.

    So here's a quick test I did with an image from my Sony A7RII at 25,600 ISO.

    The Capture One Pro RAW on import is upper right (all 100% crops). Changing either the Luminance or Color slider from the default of 50 to 100 made no noticeable difference (lower right). I could make the noise worse, by sliding it to zero though.

    In DxO, the noise reduction is a lot more effective... on import is show upper left. Dealing in some additional NR (80% Prime shown lower left) almost turns the background to a painting while keeping details of the sparkles in her face and eyelashes intact. Very impressive.

    So I don't think I'm unjustified in suggesting C1Pro has room for improvement on high ISO NR...

    Overall, the DxO image has more contrast and looks sharper. As for noise, look at the background (blue sky, sand, surf, and tree). Amazing difference. And the girl herself looks better and sharper.

    I'm glad I did this test... I need to look more closely at DxO. It seems to do a much better job with high ISO RAW files than C1P. I wonder if it also does a better job with low ISO files?
