iMac Retina Display / Capture One 8 / Photoshop Inconsistent
Hi there,
I recently purchased a retina display iMac, and I'm having a puzzling time with Capture One, specifically zooming in 100 percent to check focus. I noticed something seemed "off", as when I zoom in 100%, the image didn't seem zoomed in all the way. I'm shooting with a Nikon D800 by the way. My question is, is there some sort of setting to change this, or has anyone had a similar experience so far?
My version of Capture One is 8.1.1 and Photoshop CS6 by the way.
Here is an extremely random image for comparison:

Some things are messed up with C1 and 4K or 5K displays. I've noticed a bug on my setup (4K and Mac Pro) where sometimes C1 thinks the image (from my 5D3 at 5760px) is only the size of the preview (2880px in my case) so zooming to 100% does very little... Do you think this is the issue you are having?
If so, please file a bug with Phase One support and reference my case number as well... 171664. Fortunately, Support takes this stuff seriously. Even if your issue is different, I'd file a bug with support.
I've found a work around is to restart my Mac... It will then treat the images like their proper size and zoom will work properly... For awhile. It will revert to its odd behaviour seemingly at random. I cannot figure out what triggers it.0 -
Yes, this sounds very similar to the bug you are experiencing. I will definitely file a bug repot with them. Glad I'm not the only one! 0 -
Filing a report is good. However, I believe Phase One is already aware of the 4K and 5K screen issues. Just FYI. 0 -
Here is the response from Phase One:
"If you are used to viewing your images on a normal display, the 5K display will look substantially zoomed out by comparison. This is because the resolution of your display is 5,120 x 2,880 pixels while the D800 file is only 40% bigger or so at 7,360 × 4,912. We are using the pixels of the display natively to give the most accurate display. I suspect Photoshop is using Pixel doubling to make the image appear larger."
So this seems like more of a hardware issue than software, which is a bit of a bummer since I would love to continue using the 5K display.0 -

That makes sense... It's not a hardware issue at all. It's how different software is handling the retina qualities of your display. I think what C1 is doing is better... it's taking advantage of your high pixel density to give you a true 1:1 image pixel to display pixel rendering on screen. Photoshop is arificially doubling your image size so it looks the same as it would on a normal (non-retina) 27" display.
What is your Display resolution set to in "Preferences"... Is it "Best for Display"?0 -
I'm curious if there is a resolution on this, as I am getting ready to buy this. I had heard there is an issue and don't really want to have to explain to a client that they can't blow it up, but that's ok. I can either get the retina or not. Curious if I should wait 0
