Filtering images random and erratic

This is really hard to explain but her goes.. I have set up a new session and imported images into it. I go through and make selections to filter the images. Generally I select one star if the image is generally composed correctly and then using the filters I then look through the one star images and then go through again..normal stuff. The problems I get are that I can set one star for an image then when I move to select the next image the star on the previous on disappears. Then the selector just randomly selects more files whiteout me doing anything. It just seems to have a mind of its own.

Any ideas?

  Not much information (OS X or Windows, version, CO version?) so from the guessing department I can come up with the following suggestions. Each one can be part of the solution.
  
  If OS X the system may need maintenance (repair permissions for a start).
  If not latest CO7, please do update.
  Any version of CO7, reset preferences, see KB 1167 for details how to delete preferences; make new session; images on internal disk
