Considering getting Capture One(questions)

    Dave,
There is a new feature in Capture One that is the Phase One Media Reader. This feature will automatically launch and download image files into the workflow. Yes, you can add a file name prefix at this point of either Time as you mention, or per camera name. With a camera-specific prefix you could then process the files separately.

Yes, and HTML contact sheet files can be created.

I will try to explain the Upgrades/Updates issue as best I can since these terms are used interchangeably. An update that is a Maintenance release is always free i.e. elimination of bugs. An upgrade to the next level version adds features to the software... 2 free upgrades are allowed. Beyond this, if the software works great for you, and the added features or tools of the latest upgrades are not needed by your studio, you don't have to purchase anything.
What some fail to understand is that there is a cost involved with adding features and functionality thru R&D and accommodating many of the requests by the User.

    Sincerely,

    Keith

Keith let me see if I understand ( An update that is a Maintenance release is always free i.e. elimination of bugs. An upgrade to the next level version adds features to the software... 2 free upgrades are allowed.) A maintenance release is if you had a bug in a current version. However if you add features it is then an upgrade. Is this correct? If you add a new camera to the software is that a update or upgrade? I also would like to know if you get 2 free upgrades is there a time limit on it or can I skip upgrades and upgrade 2 or three years later?

I would also like to know the real difference between the LE, SE & Pro Versions? I think I saw that the LE version will only process 20 maximum files at one time, but the Pro has no limits. Are there any other differences?

As for the renaming ( Phase One Media Reader Yes, you can add a file name prefix at this point of either Time as you mention, or per camera name. With a camera-specific prefix you could then process the files separately. ) If I have renamed them to a time frame can then rename them later to a number value like 0001 to what ever the total number of files I have?

Last question. I am going to get a Nikon D70, but I have some conserns about you software with the D70. There was a post in this forum about the raw files not converting correctly.
(Why does Capture One 3.6 not give me the full image in its output? I shoot a Nikon D70, whose RAW dimensions are 3008x2000 pixels, yet when I batch them out to, for instance, JPEGs, the landscape-oriented files come out 3008x1996 and the portrait-oriented files come out 1487x2496 pixels. Worse yet, the images aren't scaled -- they're cropped. In the latter case -- that is, the portrait-oriented files -- I get just the middle parts of the image and hundreds of pixels are just lopped off. )

Is this really a problem with the D70 or is he doing someting wrong?

    Dave ~

    http://www.phaseone.com/upload/comparison_chart_003.pdf

This PDF file from our web site has a side-by-side comparison of our software versions. Basicly, LE is more appropriate for Consumer/ProSumer users and the Pro version for Professionals.

No, the 2 free upgrades are for in-series releases and cannot be 'held' onto.

Files can be renamed at processing

See the Announcement at the top of the Forum regarding Wrong Pixel Count on Developed File.

No, the 2 free upgrades are for in-series releases and cannot be 'held' onto.

Does this mean the if you go from say version 3.6 to version 4 you loose the 2 free upgrades. The free upgrades would be only good for versions 3.6-3.9?

When you say (Files can be renamed at processing) Are you saying the finished file or the raw file included? If the finished file does not have the same name it is going to be hard to find it a year or two later.

    Thank you for your help.

I notice that the Mac OS does many more things than the Windows OS. For example viewing Tiff browsing, adding copyright to output file ❓ . Is this something that maybe added in a newer version or is it a problem with the OS and cannot be done with windows

    Hi Dave

the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6 was a free of charge upgrade. Phase One will generally have upgrades where one of the first 2 digits are changing, eg. from 3.6 to 3.7 or 3.6 to 4.0. There are not any \"rule\" that tell us that we have to make a 3.9 before going to 4.0.

    Microsoft went from Windows 98 to Windows 2000 😄 😄 😄 😄

You are correct that the Mac version have other features than the Windows version (and opposite actually as well) We are over the versions to come getting them closer and closer, but i do not think that they will ever be 100% alike - the windows and the Mac OS are set up differently and we will respect that.

OK you still have me confused (the upgrade from 3.5 to 3.6 was a free of charge upgrade). If 3.5-3.6 was free how does a person know if an upgrade is going to be free or not? I thought I understood, but now I do not. ❓

Allow me to butt in here Dave, I'm trying to decide on this too, but I think your confusion is due to the fact that V3.6 was an exception to the usual policy.

3.6, under normal circumstances would have been a charged upGRADE. POne made an exception of this one 3.6 version upgrade only, making it free to all owners of previous versions.

This probably won't be happening again anytime soon.

    Hi dave and Hogleg

Sorry for the confusion - Hogleg is right, the 3.6 was an exception of the rule, and this exceptions was annouced in the newsletter we have sent out.
