Variant of an Entire Folder

I often go back to folders and decide I want to redo all of the photos in the folder but do not want to edit the originals. I've been doing this by making New Variants on all the images, but this shows both variants side by side and makes it difficult to select all images of a particular set of variants. In other words I want a kind of collection that is a Variant of an entire folder, so that the changes to the pictures are kept in separate versions. This would be 10 times more useful to me than the "Collections" implementation currently in place. It can be implemented within the database or, additionally, in a file inside of each folder.

  You can select images with the same variant position, so all the second variants, for example. So how about
  
  (1) right click any one of the second variants, and choose the option Select by>Variant position. That will select all the 2nd variants.
  
  (2) Apply a colour tag to them, such as blue.
  
  (3) Make a smart album for all the blue-tagged images.

  @Ian3 has given you the workaround but I think that is inadequate for the long term and would also like to place variants into collections as I see fit (i.e. not smart collections).
  
  Anyone that wants that as a features should log a support case to request it...
