Dust & Spot correction copy & paste
I don't know if this is programmed this way, but when I make dust corrections on a batch of images, I prefer to use the Spot tool rather than the Dust, it gives me a more consistent output. However, when I Shift+Control+Copy from my corrected image, only the dust correction is 'picked up' by the copy & I have to go into the Adjustments Clipboard and manually select the Dust option in order to paste these corrections into other images.
I think that this is a 'bug' I've had probably since the dust/spot option was introduced. I'm hoping that I'm not the only person in the forum who finds this a drag. (I'm hoping that the spot settings copy option was not deliberately disabled by a PhaseOne superstar boffin who knows more than I do about correcting images, this just happens to be the way I like to work & it's a time waster for me to have to manually select this copy with a mouse...)
fyi I do a lot of jewellery photography & this is a really wonderful way for me to batch clean macro backgrounds quickly, hence preferring the Spot version of the tool...
Next update please - or even a switch to allow me to include spot instructions in the copy.

For as far as I know, the behavior you describe is by design.
When you using Dust, the program corrects unevenness with the background taken into consideration. Automatically copy and apply these adjustments will easily correct dust spots in other images (same location) but potentially different color or luminance levels. Dust correction takes care of that.
Spot does not. A copied spot adjustments (potentially) introduces false colors in the target images. For that reason spot adjustments are not automatically checked on the adjustments clipboard.
You might be able to circumvent this by switching off Autoselect Adjustments and manually set the checkboxes in your adjustments clipboard.
The above is from the top of my head. Please do some tests.0 -
Thanks Paul, I thought that might be the case. I guess when I'm doing this type of work I'll have to reselect manually via the adjustments tickbox clipboard. I can't find an option to create an adjustment 'set' preset to be copied so I'll just have to live with it.
Using a tripod & doing a dozen frames with an identical set up makes the spot tool useful to me in the same way as you'd use the dust tool, & I agree with you 100% in that, in normal hand held photography, copying one spot adjustment to another different frame would not result in a 'good' result.
Funny how there's always someone who finds something unusual to do with a tool that the inventor hadn't thought of, perhaps I should celebrate that it's me today...?
Thanks again Paul, all the best

Yes, congrats for that John. 😉
When you go the the Adjustments Clipboard, in the header of the tool, click on the small triangle on the right. Here you find the properties of the tool, one of which is Autoselect Adjusted. If checked, select it again to switch it off. Now you can manually select the adjustments to be copied.0 -
Thanks Paul, I'll use that when I'm doing similar work - glad you prompted me to do further investigation as there's a bug in the Windows version that won't allow the option flyout to appear unless it has screen space to do so. In my version, I use the tools on the right & unless I float the clipboard, the options won't appear - they will only appear to the right of the box and only if they have enough space.
Have a great weekend!
Best

Hi John and Paul,
I was facing the same problem (many shots from a tripod and the same spot on the wall in the same place on the image). I found that even when the spot removal in the adjustments clipboard is activated it is not applied unlike the other adjustments I made. It seems to be a real bug and I will file a support case.0 -
Stick with it jochen, it's not very elegant, but I have found that if you shift-ctrl-copy (c) to get the required adjustments 'into' the adjustments selector, you then select the images you want to apply them to, then open the adjustments menu, manually select spot & dust adjustments, then shift-ctrl-paste (v) you should get all your adjustments applied. (windows version).
It's fiddly and not intuitive, but it does work for me...
good luck

As you might have read in this thread, spot is not automatically selected, but dust is. This is by design.
In addition, you might go a different road in the setup you described: LCC. Yes, the Lens Cast Calibration can be used to remove dust in a range of images. Make sure you have a LCC shot added (through white opal glass) in your workflow for LCC analysis (without dust).0 -

Jochen,
I don't recall reading anything in the User Guide about this and I may be wrong but ...
I have noticed that sometimes (and possibly only for some tools) a copy of settings from one image to the Adjustments clipboard and then a mass application to several images (or maybe only one image) does not seem to work where as a specific application by lift and apply will work.
I think that maybe some tools that are though to be rather image specific will not override any previous settings of tha same tool in the target image. So, for example, if you have already applied spot correction in some way (though you may not knwo you have!) then the batch update may not be applied. I'm not sure if my thoughts on this are correct - it may be some other factor. I would also guess that although the tool handles both dust and spots the automatic application of dust correction is far more likely to be correct than would be the auto correction of spots (for example) in a generic process.
Whilst the batch update is incredibly powerful it may also be disruptive if you don't use a lot of care and forethought. The idea od excluding some of the clipboard updates in some circumstances makes a lot of sense to me and if that is what has been done it show good design planning. Yet still it may not be possible to make the interface that suits all of our minute by minute needs.
I would imagine the information about the subtleties of the various tools is out there somewhere. Does anyone have any links? Maybe to the bits I have missed (or not remembered) in the User Guide?
