From the CO 4.5.2/Mac release notes, known issues: - (PRO/DB) When running Capture One on a Mac with OS X 10.5.x and more than 2 GB RAM,
occasionally tethered capture via FireWire will stop working. The issue is Mac OS X related
and occurs when connecting the camera at a time when real memory usage (RSIZE) has
exceeded 2 GB. When this issue occurs, an error message will appear in Capture One
indicating this. The camera will often stop capturing after the first capture. This problem can
be avoided if you connect the camera and start the application immediately after starting the
computer, and keep the camera connected and the application running. If this issue occurs,
please restart the computer and launch the application again.
Note that it is the RSIZE (real memory size) of the "Capture One" process it is referring to. You can see this in the Activity Monitor program. The process mentioned starts are approx. 300 MB (RSIZE column) and grows while working until you restart it. It seems that it tends to grow over 2 GB RSIZE on systems with lots of RAM.0 -
Capturing the images is not a problem. My problem is when I select an images to do adjustments or what ever C1 pro 4.5.2 crashes.
I have tried shorter and longer firewire cables same problem, I don't understand why I should have to remove all my ram except 2 GB just to run this C1 Pro 4.5.2
I have installed 8 Gb of ram so I can work on large files when capture scans with my Phase One FX.

Again, it is NOT about your RAM, it is about the RSIZE of the process which can grow to over 2 GB on machines with lots of RAM.
Phase One is apparently aware of it, so it is up to you to temporarily reduce the amount of RAM. I think - for what it is worth - that monitoring the RSIZE of the process gives you potentially control over the (memory leak of the?) program and restart it before you get into the danger zone of >2GB of RSIZE, so you don't need to remove your RAM. By the way, another user here had a similar problem and remove part of his RAM.
Another way is starting to do adjustments after you have been working tethered. It appears that it is the combination of tethering, > 2 GB RAM and > 2 GB RSIZE.
Not sure it makes any sense what I am saying here (if not, won't blame you 😉 )0 -
Paul.
I don't understand what you mean about the RSIZE of the process. I have just connected my camera and launched C1 Pro 3.7.8 and have no problems, no crashes and can edit my images.
I was the understanding that C1 Pro 4.5.2 was better, faster, ect.

i was shooting with a macbook pro 2.4 17inch for the last two days. C1 4.5 crashed several times on the first day, and four times on the second. and we were shooting resonably low volumes, a few hundred shots. it would just crash at random times.
besides that and a few other missing features, i really does blow away canons software.

Paul,
You said V 4.5. Have you tried V 4.5.2 ? It is quite stable now.0 -

hi,
i am using 4.5.2. and the latest os 10.5. 4 crashes in a day sounds bad, but i was getting that many crashes with canon software. and heaps of crashes when remote controling with canon eos capture.
even 3.7.9 crashes, but not that often.

Geoffg,
When you open Activity Monitor from Application, Utilities, go to the System Memory tab, you see the processes listed by PID, Name etc. There is also a column RSIZE and VSIZE for real and virtual memory size respectively. If you open CO 4, the Capture One process will be listed here. Take note of its RSIZE value. Start working, taking a few shots and watch its RSIZE value growing.
Activity Monitor is not the tool the average photographer (or user) would use. However, once you have become familiar with it, you will notice it is a incredible tool, both powerful and easy to use and great for troubleshooting.
Hope this helps.0 -
Can this RSIZE problem be fixed in an update (rather than removing large chunks of memory) or will it be an OS problem? 0 -
It's a Mac OS bug... 0 -
So does that mean there is no work around that Phase can do? 0 -
It's a mac OS bug but pre v4 releases aren't susceptible? Are you serious??

I all
I had the same problem untill I removed the JPEGs file that were in the same folder…0 -
Paul,
Rest assured, I feel your pain after working with 4.5.2 today.
Multiple crashes. Problems quitting C1. Lost files. Slow transfers. I have been a user and advocate of C1 for years. Today could've cost me thousands of dollars if not for a very understanding client.
3.7.8 worked just fine. I just needed support for my 1dsMarkIII.
I hope that these problems are being resolved. We should be able to plug in the camera and go to work.0 -

I have been testing with Canon DPP tethered. Once you figure it out, it is really nice.0 -
FWIW, I can't even launch 4.5.2 anymore - I get a consistent crash on launch. Mac Pro 2.8. 0 -
For working tethered with a Mac more than 2 GB of RAM you have to boot the machine without any prox in the autostart, then start C1 first. So you don´t need to remove your RAM down to 2 GB - this seems ridiculos - I wonder why they mention it would be a fault of the Mac OS but there is no other program known for causing this troubles on Macs with huge RAM…
Besides that: 4.5.2 on Mac OS X 10.5.5 is crashing such a lot of times - it is nearlly impossible to do serious work. If this would be a piece of lousy shareware I wouldn´t mind and throw it away - but it is called a professional software... hmmm.0 -

We're experiencing the same problem. The app crashes at startup. It was working - now it's not. Could it be because we also need to run (recent install) the last pro version 3.7.x? As far as we know the sessions don't seem to be compatible so we're forced to use the old version if we want to keep the settings. Kind of a design flaw if you ask us. Any assistance on this would be greatly appreciated.0 -
It is clear that not a single cause is yet identified for CO 4.5.x crashing during operation or at startup. Some posts provide details about the setup, which might help helping. Some posts however are completely lacking any detail keeping everybody clueless; the user is probably to much in shock to write it down. Never mind. I have tried to collect some potential causes and solutions, derived from experiences on this forum. I will immediately exchange each idea for a better one, so please jump in. It also may give an idea of the details that can be relevant to mention in your post.
Potential list of causes:- output profile
monitor profile
corrupt .col45 file
confusion between .col and .col45 file
corrupt application package
Mac Pro and large amount of RAM (> 2GB)
tethered operation
Potential solutions- remove .col and .col45 files
remove com.phaseone.captureone.plist from ~ / Library / Preferences
remove Capture One.app from Applications folder and re-install
limit RAM to 2 GB (temporarily)
check requirements (for example Intel Mac, 10.5.5, see release notes for latests requirements)
check version CO 4, download latest
empty batch queue from ~ / Library / Application Support / Capture One / Batch Queue
remove recipes from ~ / Library / Application Support / Capture One / Recipes
disconnect camera (tethering) from computer before starting CO4.x
One user suggested here to “boot the machine without any progs in the autostart, then start C1 first†but I currently do not have the details how manages to do that.
Hope this helps.0 -
My PhaseOne has only just started doing this – I upgraded to latest to see it solved the problem and it has not. The MacBook Pro I am using only has 2GB of RAM and I am untethered. It has rendered the software useless.
Will try some of your fixes.

Greetings All-
4.5.1 & 4.5.2 have been nothing but trouble for me. Nothing but crashes and restarts. I'm back to CS 3 and recently tried LightRoom as a trial on a PC. I liked it. I also like the controls of Adobe as well. Should a new version of 4.0 come about, I may try it but for now, I'm very turned off by it!
Best,

As per Paul_E recommendation i tried:
remove .col and .col45 files
remove com.phaseone.captureone.plist from ~ / Library / Preferences
It is no longer crashing on my MacBook Pro but is running a bit slow (I think this is a RAM issue as I only have 2GB on the laptop)

Hi,
Got a very similar problem with 4.5.2 both with my brand new 15" MacBookPro shooting tethered and also with my Imac 24"
C1 crashes always when there is no activity for about 30sec.
I shoot tethered, and after changing setup of the scene I return to the MacBook Pro and there is a window saying C1 quit unexpectedly, send report to PhaseOne.
So I have been sending about 10 of these from both of my systems.
On the Imac 24" I do have all files and also the session files on an external Firewire Disk since 2 weeks, can this be a problem?
Please advise, this problem is really uncomfortable.
Greetings,
Bert Balcaen0 -
hi fellow victims..😊
same here, continues crashes on my macpro dualcore aswell as my imac 24" shooting tethered or importing from cf cards it doesnt matter C1 keeps crashing on me dispite of all solutions given here, and i dont think i should be bothered with removing files and starting again and again to make it work. I just think it should work just like that !
Anyway not much contribution to the problem but i hope the phaseone team will fix this beautifull but also very buggy software release very soon, all these crashes are costing me huge amounts of time wich i already dont have a lot while trying to deliver my work before the ever killing deadline.
cheers all0 -
I just removed com.phaseone.captureone.plist from ~/Library/Preferences and my problem was fixed...
Now I can start testing 😄

Ben,
I get the exact same problem as you. On a MacBook Pro, C1 4.5.2 crashes every single time upon launch. Worked literally just once and since then it crashes every time I launch it. Tried uninstalling several ways (manually, via 3rd party software etc.) but to no avail..
Very frustrating, especially as C1 Pro has become a reference tool in the photo industry and yet I can't use this 'better, faster, stronger' version..what a let-down..0 -

Koby, have you tried some of the tips I listed here in this thread?
