I did try the same with C1 - and failed like you.

I did try the "museum picture" with C1 and ACR 4.1.

No way to get a good result with C1 alone - only way - > use the HDR way you did in the past.

With ACR 4.1 - no problem, the new options in ACR allow to get the full dynamic range without any HDR approch.

I am waiting for C1 4.0 to see if C1 has improved, as I like the C1 converter.

BTW, lovely photos. The black and whites are especially nice - they
have a tonality that reminds me of great Ansel Adams prints.

I'm sure you've already tried this, but I have found that using the curves
control does a pretty good job in "lifting" the shadows, when the file has
a big range and you are adjusting exposure for the high-values.

Thanks Kay and Rob, for your ideas. Think I'm just going to have to wait until C1 4.0 is released (no telling when that will be) or for the next upgrade to ACR and/or Lightroom which should support the plus files. I really need software that allows me to set both black and white prints in high dynamic range files taken outdoors, while keeping detail in the deepest shadows and highest highlights. For now I'm left with no choice but to blend in Photoshop, a less than ideal method for sure. Eleanor

    Eleanor,

Adobe just released ACR 4.2, which now officially supports the Pxx+ backs.
