Do you have a CF card in the Camera?
Is the Camera setup to store the captures through the data port as appose to a Card?

With my 1DS2 I've never had to remove the CF card from the camera for tethering to work. In fact it's useful to keep a card in the camera to grab the really good shots that only happen when the FireWire cable drops out! 😊

I'm shooting with a Canon 1D MKII tethered w/ C1 5.1.1 Pro on Vista. the software recognizes the camera and imports the ISO, and the progress bar appears, but when I trip the shutter on the camera no image imports. What am I doing wrong? Cables are new, Firewire, about 6 feet long... The manual says this is a straightforward process but such is not the case.

Do you have the Vista 64-bits version. IIRC, Canon delivers no Windows 64-bits device drivers for this camera.

It's also likely to cause communication issues and prevent stability. Bottom line, shoot to card or shoot tethered, mixing the two causes complications.

I've been using C1 tethered since day one (2003-2004) with my 1Ds / 1Ds II. Never had any problems with CF cards in the camera. The only REAL problem is when the cable drops out and after sutting down the camera and putting the cable back in, there's sometimes no connection and you'll have to restart the system. Probably because the Twain drivers gets nuts. The connection to the Canon camera's is THE problem with tethered shooting IMO.

Also, again, having a CF card in the camera can (and often does) cause conflict. I would suggest against it.

I certainly going to try your suggestion. I hope you're right. Saves me a lot of headaches. 😂

Drew your are my hero. After 6 years of struggling with bad connections and re-connexions restarting computers you finally solved my problem. Swapping lenses, pulling out fire wire cables, all troubles are over. The program recognizes the camera in an instance, no matter what I do. No more restarting computer. It should be in capital letter in the manual.

IF YOU SHOOT WITH CANON TETHERED REMOVE YOUR MEMORY CARDS!!!!!

    Thank you very very much.
