How-to convert settings from 3.7 to 4.0
I have created a small utility that can convert some settings from 3.7 to 4.0. It reads the c1w (workfile) and patches the .Cos (4.0 xml settings) files.
Find it with some very sparse documentation at:

Wow, at a glance (I haven't installed C1v4 final since uninstalling the beta), this looks like a fantastic piece of work for which many will be proud, that I'm sure of! Many thanks (and I haven't even used it yet!).
It also proves that P1 could've done this in a cinch if they could've seen the importance in the feedback they must've received about the lack of importing settings. It would be nice (but also wishful thinking) if your efforts could somehow be rewarded by them - after all this is something the end users should not have had to worry about.
I assume the tool associates the RAW files to the .c1w files by an embedded image name (as opposed to calculating the long c1w filename)? If so, I assume this will only work where the image hasn't been renamed within C1? And I assume that, where there are two .c1w files with the same embedded filename that the util picks the first one it finds in the v3.7 cache folder?
P.S.: I hope the existence of this tool doesn't become P1's excuse to not progress any development in their own native support of old settings / cache structure. I hope this is seen as a progressive step forwards rather than replacing the work many believe they should've done before v4 was released.0 -
I haven't loaded and tried it, but thanks for doing this... With over 150,000 CaptureOne v3 settings, I can't imagine now having the ability to read them in C4.
Thanks to imacken for pointing out this thread to me.

It will go through alle the c1w files and read the filename from within the c1w file and tries to locate that raw file in the raw folder. If there is a match the transfer of the settings will be performed. If there are two c1w files with the same name embedded they will both be processed and therefor the settings fron the last one will win. I cannot use the UID (the long strange name) since its not the same from 3.7 to 4.0.
If your rawfile is renamed you just need to rescan the folder with 3.7 before running the tool, then the c1w will be updated with the new name.

If I understand it correctly, it does not copy the curve settings?

Correct, in version 0.01 curve is not copied. I do not use the curve offen in my own raw files so it has low priority. But I will look at it this weekend 😉

Hmm... that was quicker than I though. Version 0.02 is up now supporting Curve.
BUT: When I make the exact same curve in 3.7 and 4 I get quite difference in the result - Could someone that uses curve please check the result if they make the exact same curve in 3.7 and 4 ?

Great, will use it when I get home (now I am at a meeting...). I am not surprised that the results may look different in both versions. In v3.7 I have saved quite a few useful curves that I use as starting points for different kind of exposure etc. Now I can apply each curve to just one photo in v3.7, translate the settings using your model, import in v4, and then save the curves in v4!
Thanks a bunch,

version 0.03 is up, it now uses DLLs that are more common found on all PC's 😉 0 -
Version 0.04is up, supports shadow and highlight levels (not midtones yet) - and should be able to run on more PC's than verison 0.03. 0 -

Hi,
I have got it to work on my AMD Athlon PC with version 0.04. Be careful to set the filename to "as captured" in v3.7 when generating the *c1w preview files.
It works like a dream. I used it to get my saved curves for different lighting conditions from v3.7 to v4. Very useful! Thanks Erik.0 -
the phaseone folks noted in a previous thread that the same settings on similar controls may have different results due to changes in the back (ie, the contrast control has a different look than in 3.7).
In theory it should be possible to construct a table or curve that could match 3.7 settings to 4.0, with controlled images of something like a gretag chart and testing of output.
that would be quite a bit of work... P1 should do this since they have the algorithms there in front of them which would make short work of the math.0 -
Thanks Erik.
Amazing oversight on P1's part not providing any conversion support.0 -
A new version (005) that supports CaptureOne 4.5 is available from the website

Happy converting !

so was there ever an official converter in the end? I'm a Dxo user facing the same crap over at dxo, except nobody there made a converter. Was looking for other options but if c1 is also like that there's no point crossgrading regardless how good it is.
Maybe with LR2 we can guarantee projects can be upgraded in the future. Or maybe picasa.0 -
Sam, Phase never made an official converter for the image settings to go from CO 3.7 to CO 4.x. This utility was made by a very ingenious CO user. Since CO 4.x is a complete rewrite of the program, the old settings files are no longer compatible, but since these setting files are XML based, it shows great promise that they'll still work when version 5 comes out. I say promise since no one really knows where things will go in the future, nor would a software developer put that restriction on themselves.
Think of it this way, if Phase One could make a 10 fold improvement in v. 5 by scrapping the old files, or only 6 fold improvement in v. 5 by keeping them, I am all for getting the most improvements and most here probably feel the same.
If you are coming from Dxo, I personally think you'll be quite amazed at the results of this program. I did try Dxo myself, and personally I believe the image quality offered by CO 4 is quite remarkable.0 -

Are you kidding me?? There is absolutely no excuse for Phase to abandon their "archive" settings in one major upgrade. The key word here is ARCHIVE. Makes the term rather meaningless if you don't
support it in future versions. How would you feel if Photoshop rewrote PSD files every other year? If Photoshop can read PSD files since version 1, there is NO REASON Phase can't provide backwards compatibility
either within the program or through an official converter. This is the number one thing that ticks me off with the new V4.0
