    Hi Ash,

Capture One doesn't accept gray scale images. Accordingly, you should scan your films using an RGB output for the scanner.

    Ah,

I'll try that next time time. I only had use of the scanner temporarily but I will note this down for when I purchase one myself.

    Thanks so much.

Besides scanning to RGB you may want to use raw scanner output, if available, and do the conversion from negative to positive in Capture One.   I find I get better results that way using Vuescan with my Epson 600.

Vuescan lets me save the "raw" output of the scanned image as a DNG file.  Once in Capture One I do these steps:

    • set the curve to Linear Response,
    • set the white balance from the border of the scanned image
    • crop the image to size
    • convert it from a negative to a positive using a saved adjustment on levels which drags the white point all the way to the left and the black point all the way to the right.
    • Get close to proper color balance (for color negatives) by using the auto button on levels with channel mose set to RGB in preferences.

That sounds like a lot of work but with keyboard shortcuts it only takes a few seconds.  The time sink is getting rid of dust and negative spots using the heal tool.   It doesn't help that recently I've been scanning 30-50 year old negative that were not stored very well.

Thanks for that tip, Marco. I didn't know Vuescan could save as DNG.

I just tried it, loaded it into C1 and now have a much better image of my grandparent's wedding.

    Regards

    Shane

I'm away from my main system I used for film.

But do you have any idea if the "RAW" scanning to dng is available for Silverlight scanning app?
