ICC Profiles and Printing
-
Hi Walter,
I have this issue from version 11 or so. I have submitted (2 years ago ?) a feature request to the C1 staff to:
- have a more user-friendly printing module (such as the one in Photoshop, for instance)
- solve this colour rendering issue you mention.
No answer up to now.
My workaround is to print using Photoshop or, as you do, to let the printer manage and select the ICC profile in the printer driver.

Does this problem also affect images you export with recipes with ICC profiles you send to a lab to be printed?
Thank you in advance,
C

You should send to the Lab what they expect to receive.
Most commercial (though perhaps not specialist industry Pro labs) seem to expect RGB or CMYK files in jpg, png or tiff format.
For example here is Whitewall's advice
https://www.whitewall.com/uk/service/faq/image-file-requirements/
And here is what they offer in terms of ICC profiles for Proofing.
I have no affiliation of any sort with Whitewall. I simply recall that their web site is quite informative and easy to use in terms of the sort of information linked above.
If you are printing to your own printer then much the same situation pertains. Proof using the printer and media icc profile for the combination you intend to use but send to the printer using a colourspace is it designed to work with when printing. That always seems to give the most consistent results unless one dives into some of the more complex approaches for print preparation and management software that mostly bypass the printer manufacturer's controls and allow you to do your own thing.
FWIW I have a fairly old Canon printer and its print controls via various driver updates have mostly managed to confuse any photo application from which I have sent a file for printing. I usually produce an output file to jpg and then send that to the printer and let it do its own thing. Sometimes I print directly but if the mage has a predominance of certain colours that I know can give somewhat uncontrollable results, I go via jpg. If I had a large printer and was printing at scale with extreme detail I might go for a TIFF output.
HTH.
