C1 Editing a DNG: Are the edits/changes kept in the DNG or do I need to export to get an image with the C1 changes?

Capture One NEVER modifies an original image.   The closest you'll get is an XML sidecar file with metadata changes.  If you want to see your image edits outside of Capture One you have to export/process the image.

C1 never changes a source file no matter what type it is. All edits are held externally.

However if you Export a variant to a file type such as TIFF or DNG the new file will include the edits burned in to give a new starting point for any further editing. Either DNG or TIFF should provide the quality required provided you set teh export instructions accordingly. TIFF is the traditional approach.

A tiff file will likely be about 3x the size of a DNG file but that may also include additional features that are supported by TIFF creating exports processed but not by DNG supporting procresses (as far as I am aware.)  For example the option to export overlays. See the Export Recipe for some possible differences.

You would really need to compare the options and make your own choices about which output file type suits you best.

    Ok thank you.

I was guessing that was the case, but wanted to make sure.

    ;)

Alright....I guess I"ll try first to export to TIFF, whew..these files are HUGE to begin with individually...this is gonna be one MASSIVE image when I get them composited. Each dng right now is just barely shy of 300MB each....

I am impressed ! Which camera do you own which gives you 300 MB DNGs ?

These were shot on a Fuji GFX100.

Each shot was composed from 80 to I think one was 120 images that were each focus stacked with Helicon Focus for the resultant DNG files I mentioned here.

I used the HF RAW to DNG workflow.  I tried it several other ways...doing the TIF round trip with C1, using C1 to output DNG to HF and back as DNG....etc.

I even tried a quick try with Zerene, but out of them all on this go around it appears the RAW to DNG with HF and then into C1 worked the best...using method "B" of Helicon Focus.

These are some pretty big files...it will be interesting to see how well Affinity Photo works with up to 10 images I'm going to be compositing together.

I was quite happy with how C1 and HF worked with these large number of large images.  I'm working on a Mac Pro that is fairly middle of the road in configuration...

this is not true for DNG files !

@ SFA seems you never in your life exported a DNG files from C1 right ?

I have no idea what you are aiming at, but I just edited one of my .NEFs far beyond the reasonable just to make sure it would stand out in any of my image browsers. I exported that variant as DNG from C1. Guess what, it works for me. Even metadata seems correct, but they were set by Photo Mechanic (I do not do metadata in C1).

Note that I use Windows 10 which may possibly account for the observed difference.  Also, I use C1 in Session mode (no catalog for me), but I would be surprised if that comes into play here.

..and than you opened the dng with photoshop and affinity ?

i´m sure a lot of professionals, including me would love having full dng support in c1 but sadly this is not the case.  when you need to deliver raw files dng is by far the best option.  everybody has photoshop but almost nobody has c1 , no graphic designer, no ad agency no print shop....

I"m back to working on my project that I started this thread about....

I'll give it a try, make C1 changes to the Helicon Focus RAW-to-DNG focus stacked images.....and export them from C1 as different DNG files...and bring into Affinity Photo for compositing.

I'll see how it seems to do and try to report back here.

    Thanks for all the input!!
