Adding gradient to standard mask

Is there a simple way to add a gradient to a standard mask?

E.g., I have an object in my frame, and I create a mask for that object, and I want to decrease the exposure of one side of the object, that gradients to the other side of the object.  i.e. add some shadow, that realistically grades from one side of the mask to the other (in a direction of my choice).

I know you can do this in Photoshop, and I wish I could use the Photoshop terminology of this functionality, but I'm not proficient in PS and don't know what it's called!

  Probably best to first draw a gradient mask over the entire image while noting where you want it in relation to the object in question.
  Then use the erase brush to erase the gradient everywhere except where it covers the object.
  You might get a warning box (can be turned off) asking if you want to rasterize the gradient mask before C1 will let you erase it.
