Cannot export anything?
Thought I would take a look at Capture One Express for Nikon but cannot export any edited image whatsoever? All options refuse to export due to repeating message "A selected variant cannot be processed. This may be due to license restrictions. File: C:\Users\Ian\Desktop\Myfile.jpg
What use is an image editor that refuses to export? Bizarre.
A non-starter for me looks like I am back to Adobe.

You certainly should be able to export. I have seen some other users mention that message "a selected variant cannot be processed" but I don't know what the answer is to it. You could search the forum here and see whether someone has mentioned the answer, or you could use the Submit a request link at the top right of this page to ask for help from the Support team.
And I assume you have tried the old faithful option of restarting the computer...?

Thanks Ian,
Yes I had rebooted (but for a different reason). Still had the error. Then (just) I searched for the 'OFFLINE' message I had at top of screen then I realised that Capture One no longer knew where the original image was (suggesting it was using a surrogate copy for editing purposes rather than an original (presumably for non-destructive purposes). So I have kicked off a re-import of 75,000 of my ginormous RAW files (from Nikon D850) and tried same actions on an early import follows some simple editing.
Success, that seemed to allow an export though this time since I mostly export to a compressed 16 bit tif file (for print purposes) the lzw compression option had disappeared? Capture One (rather like Affinity though C1 is better than Affinity in this respect) does not (to me) have a natural workflow. Something for me to learn when I have time?
Despite teaching IT and winning the IT Oscar followed by a career in IT Quality Engineering it always beggars belief the interfaces that Developers implement for the public. This is where Lightroom is infinitely superior. Though Photoshop must still shock the newcomer when first opened. That big blank space with lots of 'things' around the outside? Lol
Anyway, I seem to be sorted now. If Capture One adjust their draconian licensing policy (Adobe also) - they could both learn from Serif here, I would consider buying a full licence but as there are two photographers in my house (my wife also) and we both have a desktop and laptop the licence restrictions do not suit. That and I have a couple of years of Adobe CC plans, DXO, OnOne, Luminar and Affinity I am in no rush. The world of over priced software and restrictive licensing is ending.
Anyway, rant over and thanks for your help.
I wonder it anyone from Capture One ever wanders in here?
cheers

For some reason that I can't now remember, if I ever knew it, Capture One only offers ZIP compression for 16-bit TIFFS, but it offers both ZIP and LZW for 8-bit TIFFs.

Ian,
That would certainly explain that then. Interestingly I read an article within the last few days (but do not remember where) that it has been ascertained that zipping a tif is better (it achieves a smaller but still lossless file) than using lzw that in some cases can produce a larger file than the original (and I have seen this). I do not use 8 bit unless forced to so will use zip in future in Capture One (even Adobe Photoshop CC 2021 filters can only use 8 bit!).
Thanks again for your help and knowledge.
cheers

@Ian Douglas
Capture One express has a dedicated Catalogue based functionality and part of that allows for basic types of edit (but not all types of edit) to be performed based on the Preview file generated when images are imported to the catalogue.
As I recall from my time with Lightroom way back at version 1, LR did much the same thing. The idea is that it gives a good enough impression of the potential results for most requirements and is working with a small files so can appear to be responsive.
The full export result, unfettered by the limits of the preview, requires access to the original source file. Indeed many advanced features and functions only work to best effect if all the recorded data is available to the processing engine.

Thanks SFA, always good to know these things. I am an uncurable non-reader of manuals. I always think a direction (workflow) should more or less obvious or implied at least.
cheers
