MacMini and External Drive
I am looking into buying a new MacMini to replace my ageing iMac. My image library (the RAW material iteself) would not fit on 1TB internal drive of the mini. How is the performance with MacMinis and external drives for C1 and what are you actually using? I saw there was a similar post 6 yrs ag. I try again as technology has moved a bit since then.
Thanks a lot.

Both version of the MacMini use USB 1 and USB 3. The latest space
grey version, though, comes with 4x USB 3 — very cool!
If your drive can handle USB 3, you'll be just fine but if not than you
should upgrade to tak full advantage of speed transfer.
I recently helped a student of mine who got the white version and it is
performing very well.0 -
As long as you keep the catalog on the SSD internal drive you should be fine with images on external.
I run a Mini with an external OWC Thunderbay RAID (8TB of raws). I had a 4-drive setup and migrated last summer to an 8-bay unit. Both work great. Probably over kill though as you don't need to connect via Thunderbolt, USB 3 is fast enough and speed difference is probably not noticeable. You can, however, see speed gains if you run a RAID as multiple drives serve data up faster than a single drive (whether it attaches with USB-3 or TB). But in real world use, if you are not processing large batches of images, I'm not sure you'd notice.
Note: The new "M1" (Apple Silicon) minis appear to be faster in most measurements than the Intel versions.... the GPU performance is way, way faster than the Intel Minis. CPU is faster too. So I'd look carefully at those.

Thank you very much for the info. This will make me buy the mini...

Helmut, I don't know what kind of setup you are seeking, but I've read that some of the monitor calibration tools don't work on the M1 Macs yet. They will eventually of course. There are other compatibility delays for different apps, so that would be my only potential concern at this point.
For instance, my OWC ThunderBay raid unit requires Softraid which is not out yet for M1 Macs (though there is a beta I believe).0
