Image variants and user collections

It seems if I have a number of variants and want to put one of them into a collection they all appear.  My example is for say a collection for a brides wedding album and a parents album.  I would like one variant in each.  Lets say a colour variant in the brides album (user collection) and B/W in the parents album (user collection).  

How would I do that ?

  The only way to do that is with smart albums. So if you had, say, a green colour tag for the bride's collection and a blue colour tag for the parents' collection, you could create smart albums. using the colour tags as the criteria for the smart albums.

  Thanks Ian, I had a suspicion that would be the case.  It's a bit unfortunate.  I generally use the tags to narrow down the selection.
