Unable to create new variants
I have encountered a problem in creating a new variant in Capture One 21.
When I select the new variant option in the browser the variant is not displayed. Instead the image from which I have tried to create it from displayed the number 1 in the top right hand corner. Curiously if I then drag that image into any user collection then the image and its variant is displayed. All images are located on a external SSD drive. The catalogue is in the pictures default location
From my troubleshooting so far it appears to be catalogue specific. If I create a new test catalogue and import a few image from the same external drive I am able to create new variants as normal
Any suggested solutions would be appreciated
Thanks

If you create a new variant (was opposed to a cloned variant) then what you get is a completely unedited new virtual copy of the raw file. One of the effects of this is that for instance any star rating or colour tag is lost. I suspect that if you are looking at the image in a virtual collection of some kind like a smart album that could explain what you see. For instance if I have a smart album of all 5 star images, and create a new variant of one of them it won't appear in the smart album because it doesn't have 5 stars. But if I create a cloned variant, it has all the attributes of the original, including the 5 star rating, so it will appear in the smart album.
If you look at the image in the actual folder it resides in, rather than any user or catalog collection, do you still see the problem?

Thank you for your helpful response. If I filter images by star rating and then select one image for example with a two star rating and try to create a new variant the problem remains. However if I navigate to that same image with the same two stars but directly from the all images folder but with the star rating filter deselected I am able to create the new variant. So the solution would appear to be is to ensure that all star/colour tags are disabled before creating a new variant even if the image still has a rating applied to it.
Not very intuitive although maybe that's just me
Thanks

I'm using the F2 or F3 function key, that works just as ever before

Frank,
To re-iterate what Ian wrote.
There are 2 options for creating a variant. One is to create an exact copy of the current variant with all settings and IPTC metadata in place. This will appear in any filtered collection (i.e. a smart album) that the source variant appear in since is has the same data to work with.
If, however, you create a brand new variant with no edits or added IPTC data and existing filter rules are likely to be non-applicable. (Camera EXIF data like F-stop, shutter speed, etc. would be available - just to confuse things if you happened to use those as filters.)
Whether or not a freshly created variant will be visible depends on which creation option you chose and whether you are currently working with a filtered selection of images - some sort of album for example - that is selecting the variants visible based on some information added to the variant data as part of your processing that would not be available from the original source file. As described above although the actual filter that does not select the newly created variant may be something less obvious than, say, a star rating.

I am having the same issue with "Clone Variant" in Capture One Pro 23 (Build 16.01.20)
For example, if I select a photo within a virtual Album or Smart Album, and then select Clone Variant, the source image has a number 1 in the upper right corner, but know "camera icon" in the upper left to expand the Variant Group. Note that it does not matter if I have Star Ratings or Color Tags associated with the source image being cloned.
But if I do the exact same thing in the Capture folder where the image files are stored, Clone Variant works fine.
Any ideas as to whether this is a potential bug in Version 23?
Thank you in advance.

Before version 23, it was impossible to have just one of several variants of a photo in an album (though you could in a smart album). So if there were, say, three variants of the photo, all three would show in both the actual folder where the file was stored, and in the album (or albums) it had been added to. So, of course, it made sense that you could collapse all the variants or expand them just as readily in an album or in a folder.
Now in version 23, you are able to add a variant to an album without all the other variants of the photo being added with it. So for your image with three variants, you could have two of them in the album, and one of them not.
So it makes sense to me that the way variants can be displayed in albums would be changed as well. I don't think it is a bug - I think it is a consequence of being able to add variants to albums independently.

I am facing what I think is the same issue. In my case, I have many photos of birds that I tag with the name of the bird. I then create a smart album for each bird (Ex. American Robin) which filters based on the keyword containing "American Robin". This picks up the images with the tag "American Robin" but it does not include variants of images even if they have that tag. As described above, the first image in each variant stack is present in the smart album with a [1] in the top right corner but no way to expand it. Additionally, if I select an image in this smart album and create a CLONE variant, that clone is NOT added to the smart album even though it contains the same meta-data tag "American Robin." I am not sure how to get around this and any help would be appreciated :(

I think it is a software design weakness (at best).
If a user works in an album and creates a new variant chances are higher that he wants to do this in and for that album rather than not. But even if one does not agree to this, there should be an easy way to see / find that. Which is best done if it is shown in that album. It is very easy to remove it from there for the cases where the variant should not be in that album.
There are not many feature in v23 and as always they don't get it right from the start or never really fine tune it to perfection, which is not what I expect from a sofware company which is requesting this big amount of money from the users.
