Teathered connection
When I use the USB cable for tethered connection sometimes it works and sometimes it does not. Is the cable bad?
-
Quite possibly. I've tried tethering with a USB cable that works fine in other circumstances, but didn't work between the Nikon and C1.
Tether Tools cables seem to work.

Monoprice cables will work just as well as tether tools at a fraction of the price. I work in large studio with many bays running 8 hours a day 5 days a week all tethered. Tethered connections can be finicky at times. Here are some steps that have worked best when troubleshooting:
- Check cable connections.
- Power cycle the camera.
- If Capture One still doesn't show the camera then restart Capture One. That works a lot of the time.
- It helps a lot to secure the connections with gaffers tape or locking devices. You don't want the cable wiggling around at the connection to the camera.
- Powered USB hub can help
- Replace USB cable. They eventually have to get replaced.
- It's also pretty easy to break the USB port on the camera. If you've tried the above and the port seems wiggly I would send the camera in for repair.
We buy the cheapest Monoprice cables since the more expensive cables have never shown to work any better. We go through hundreds of cables a year. For years it looked like the 15' active USB 3 cable we used from Monoprice was the exact same cable as Tether Tools. We own both and can't tell a difference. Was $13 vs $40.
