NIK collection 4
Not sure if it's a NIK or Capture One problem. If I open a file and Edit With the new Silver Efex Pro 3 it creates a Tif file and then a B&W image. However this B&W image is not saved back to disk or to Capture One. Using the previous version Silver Efex Pro 2 the B&W image is correctly created in the Tif file and in Capture One. I'm running Capture One Pro V14.2 on MacOS Big Sur

Same problem here!

NIK 4 has too many bugs this is just one.
but the control point improvement is really fantastic https://youtu.be/XSPWvITfGPA?t=308 I use viveza since the NIK days and this makes difficult selective corrections very easy and fast, he is of course wrong to say this is not possible otherwise but it would take much longer. so dxo has now two powerful add ons for c1....;-)

The response from DxO
Greetings,
Unfortunately, we do not support Capture One as a host software for Nik Collection 4:
regards,Riley - DxO Labs Support Team

hm maybe Riley does not full understand the situation, c1 does not need to be a host software as this plugins are also stand alone apps. I´m in touch with dxo over other bugs and I will add this issue.
( sorry have to say this, but what a difference dxo makes when it comes to support, no ? )

I hope so - I'm having to round trip through Photoshop which works.

ok, try this render a tiff within C1, than open the SFX app from the program folder. now drag the file from the browser onto the SFX icon in the dock. the file gets loaded and processed without issues so far as I can see.

Silver Efex Pro 3 and the other NIK Collection 4 apps detect, that the opened tiff belongs to C1 and hides the File menu!
But clicking the Apply button in the bottom line after all adjustments are made does unfortunately not safe the file back to disk...
This seems to be a NIK's problem.
CSP's solution helps, if you quit C1 before opening the rendered tiff in SFX. This makes the File menu visible again and the adjustments can be applied using the Save command.
1 -
when the bottom bar with the save option is not visible use menu - file - save or simply command -s

Yup, this is a problem within the Nik Plugin which didn't happen in V3. I know that DXO don't officially support C1 but I hope they can resolve this.
0 -
hm ...even when the tiff file is already in the catalog ? what I see is that when you call the plugins from c1 nothing is saved.

Hi CSP,
I just checked and its definitely a problem within the DXO Silver Efx Plugin, all I get is the TIFF file without the filter applied. Very frustrating, I will see if DXO can see what the issue is by opening a web ticket, I hope we can work with them to resolve this,

no, not yet waiting for the m1 27imac.
NIK 4 has some strange issues, some files trigger not enough disk space response in PS, in affinity photo sometimes they work but more often not, could not find a logical pattern, bigger files 1Gb and more lead to an immediate crash but in dxo PL they work smooth and without issue, also when used as stand alone app.

The same issue exists in the Viveza plugin as well, so it must have something to do with the changes made to support the new interface?

from dxo feedback, dxo will focus on PS first but asked me to open a separate case for c1 even when they say it is not officilly supported.
aslo has anyone look what happens we you change the global settings via the nik select tool preferences in PS ?

CPS,
aslo has anyone look what happens we you change the global settings via the nik select tool preferences in PS ?
Not sure what you mean? What is supposed to happen?

was just asking, did not play with this but there are global settings for nik

but Silver Efex Pro 3 changes it's behavior while C1 is running!
The File menu disappears, so Open and Save commands are not available (cmd+s doesn't help) ...
This happens even when SFX is started from the Finder. You have to close C1 and restart SFX again!

Makes no difference to the C1 issues, but noticed a bug in the Select Tool in that it doesn't always load when PS loads

@Ruediger. interesting dxo told me to try nik with only PS running...

@CSP. SPX checks if C1 is running and then assumes, that it's editing a C1 file (see the status line at the bottom).
You can check this by opening SPX's stand alone app from the Finder while C1 is already running... The File menu with Open and Save commands are be hidden!
DXO states that C1 is not officially supported but they've integrated a detection for C1 that makes the app unusable, because the adjustments are not saved in the TIFF :-(
See my workaround here.

Here is a clumsy workaround that works. use Edit in Silver Efx command to create a TIFF variant. There is no point editing and applying the changes in Silver Efx yet. Click apply to return to Capture ONe. Close Capture one. Open Silver Efx as standalone, use command O and navigate to the folder containing the TiFF variant and select that file. Edit in Silver Efx, Save the changes (command S) and exit Silver Efx. Open CapOne, that Tiff variant will appear as a B&W file.
I don't know if DxO needs to make a fix or if Capture One needs to update its Edit in Plugin. Either way this seems to work.

Two workarounds for Mac, may not work with Windows
1 if you open Silver Effects Pro and Viveza as standalone apps, File menu item is available, Now you can open C1 and 'Edit With' to send tif file. Click File->Save to update tif in C1. Leave SEP and Viveza open, toggle back to C1.
2. If you have DxO Photolab, open if along with Capture One. From C1, 'Edit With' to pass Tiff as new variant. Make changes in SEP or Viveza and click 'Apply'. Changes will show up in C1 as long as Photolab is running when you send file to SEP or Viveza from C1.

@gerald Moulder, thanks, that is a much cleaner process.

Opened a ticket with DxO and attached a number of log files showing errors and warnings if SEP or Viveza are opened as a standalone with C1 open. Also, errors and warnings when SEP or Viveza are called from PS plugin. Here is their response:
Thanks for your patience.
Unfortunately we can't assist any further with this this issue, since it relates to unsupported third party software. The Nik Collection still works correctly with the additional software which is listed as compatible, so all we can advise in this case is to contact the developers of those other programs and ask them to work on improving compatibility with DxO's products.
In turn we will record this ticket as requesting support for Capture One and On1 in future versions.
Kind regards,Steve - DxO Labs Support Team 1
I asked for a refund and acces to Nik 3 collection.

I asked for a refund and they wanted access to remotely remove it from my computer first! I get the impression that the Nik Collection is just a cash cow to them, that they can tweak a bit and make some money from. Its a real shame they have chosen not to engage with C1 users and fix, what must be, a very minor compatibility issue.

James - did you ever get a refund? I am in the same situation. It is appalling they want to remote access my computer to uninstall the software for the refund. I am thinking of disputing with my CC. The money is not the issue - but the principle!
This really is sad - I have supported this platform since the beginning - and even bought a license when DxO acquired it as a show of support even though I had the free license.

Hi Chris,
No I canceled my request after they told me that the bugs I had reported would be fixed, how foolish was i. But yes they wanted me to use TeamViewer so they could remove the software from my computer before they would refund it.
Absolutely shocking behaviour, I have no idea what is going on at DxO but it is obvious that they have deliberately put code into V4 that prevents the plugins working with some software. Either that or they have no interest in resolving the issues of poor coding.
Alas I am stuck with V4 now, but at least I can get it to work, let me know how you get on,
Regards
James

Update V4.1.0 does not fix the issues, but the plugins are more stable now in PS

I emailed Dan Hughes of Rochester Institute Of Art, a DxO Instructor and one of the best instructors I have watched (along with David Grover), and he is going to ask DxO about the problem. Hopefully, he can convince them to look at the code and understand the functionality. Based on one workaround, I think simply removing 'Capture One' and all refereneces to 'On1 Photo' would solve the problem. The fact that the error log states SEP is expecting Standalone tells me the developers did not have a clear understanding of why capture one and on1 photo were checked. I hope to get some brownie points from David as well!

What I find strange is that Colour Efex and Analog continue to work just fine: both have a ‘Save’ rather than ‘Apply’ button.
To Gerald Moulder’s work around I would add that I « Edit with>PhotoLab4 », then invoke SEF in PL4 - all changes are automatically sent back to C1 - can also do a bit of tweaking in PF4 if desired.
