14.3 Export Workflow issues and crashes
Hi All,
First off, I do 'normally' love the new features that are added to C1 but I've just comeback from a weeks work on a racehorse festival photographing and delivering multiple batches of images throughout 5 days and have had numerous issues with the new export feature.
A list of issues, I'll go into more detail below if needed.
- MacBook Pro (2013) Catalina, hard crashed 3x over 5 days during export. Nothing apart from Premiere has ever hard crashed my MacBook before.
- Export Panel layout - Export button now miles away in the lower left corner rather than close to the recipe list. Kept looking for the tab - consistency of the workflow has gone.
- Export Panel Layout - I don't need a big preview, it just makes the distance across to the Export button further away. I know which images I want to export in the previous screen.
- Export panel order. It would be more logical to keep similar panels together. ie. recipes with format and size, I think Location is the one I use most as I have to change this for each set of images I output (client brand folders, social media folders etc.) The recipes I've used the same for months so this doesn't need to be the first panel. Naming is also rarely used, as it Format and size as this is part of the Recipes. Summary is useful but not at the bottom out of view because of all the other panels. And the Export button should be close to these, not on the other side of my screen.
- Export button - I have to hit 'Return' twice to get it to Export.
- If I select a set to export, say 10, it opens the export panel with only 1 selected but the orange export button says 10 selected!
- Location panel issues - 1. No button to open the location (real slowdown in workflow without this) 2. No list of previously used sub folders, big slowdown in workflow. 3. "Sample Path" should be named "Path". I had the default folder set to each day, then when I'd add a first new folder in the sub folder space it was okay but as soon as I need to get the images to send I had to go to the finder, locate the folder, open it and select and then send, real pain. If I changed the sub folder name for a second set of outputs it doesn't remember the previous one so you'd have to go into the finder, navigate to the folder and copy the name exactly. Then if you wanted to switch back to the previous folder you'd have to go through the process again.
- Selecting multiple recipes I had to keep changing the sub folder name for each recipe! Should be able to write it once and then choose it or changed it. And of course as above none are remembered from the previous names.
- Batch Queue! Where has it gone? Can't see how many are done, left to do. Cant stop the Queue if I make a mistake (As in the subfolder nightmare). When my Mac hard crashed during export I'd open C1 up and have no idea what the status was of the previous export. In the end I deleted the output that I'd done previously and started the export again for safety. Lost a couple of hours over the 5 days with this issue.
- Long list of panels - definitely not good, screen is cluttered with them. Much much easier with tabs! And would be even easier if these where grouped... Recipes/Format/Adjustments/Watermarks/Metadata Second set for outputting ... Location/Naming/ Third row Batch/progress/Stop/Start Bottom - Summary.
- I'd prefer to have Export back as a tab (so it keeps the workflow neat and obvious).
- My MacBook when plugged into power, isn't switching to and using Nvidia Geforce GT 750M Card on export. I have to do so manually with a little App. Export time was 4 times longer without it being used.
I've always loved C1 for it's clean workflow but recently the trend towards panels, fixed panel, floating panels, collapsing panels, panels in different orders is driving me mad and slowing my workflow down. Also I have a copy on both my MacBook and home Mac Pro with no easy method of replicating the settings/layout/recipes between them, so if you forget to change one thing on a second machine it can be frustrating when your in a hurry.

Hi Dominic, pop over to here and vote. You are certainly not alone in your thinking:

Hi Dominic,
First, to reinforce what Daniel said, you're definitely not alone in disliking the new Exporter and associated workflow. In addition to what he suggested, I'd encourage you to submit a Support Request, as nobody seems to know whether C1 developers or anyone else at the company monitors this forum. However, some of your issues can be fixed now:
Try using Exporter keyboard shortcuts for both setting up/changing Exporter settings and also processing with the last settings used.
Try showing the Activity window; that's how I keep track of how many images have been processed.
These won't help with your UI issues (which I share, btw), but may help with your workflow and some of your frustration. I'm hoping/wishing that a maintenance release comes out soon that will fix the UI stuff.

Hi guys, I’ve been assured by the team at Capture One they are very aware of the issues experienced with the new update and are monitoring this forum. Clear descriptions of what the issues are is the most helpful thing we can all do. I’ve always found them really helpful and responsive and I’m sure they don’t want the community of professional users to feel there tool of choice is going backwards in terms of usability.

My main points are:
- More efficient softproofing: The old way of proofing "View>Proof profile>Selected recipe" using the Process Recipes tool is more efficient (less clicks and less eye and mouse movements). I use this a lot switching between different profiles DURING my editing sessions (=not only as the final step) or at least switching between a monitor profile and a print profile back and forth with just a click in the process recipe tool
- More efficient in-between exports: The same is true for exports, especially in-between exports (less clicks, and less eye and mouse movements ) than opening the modal/blocking exporter window. Dealing with the exporter window and the additional proof viewer and browser though I've dealt already with the normal viewer/browser break the fluidity of the workflow
-
Floating tools: Like the others I also float the outputs tools, if I am using my floating workspace.
Better oversight in case of limited screen resources, less clicks etc. than the modal/blocking exporter window. Only for the final export such a window seems acceptable (but the minority of exports are final as I am doing most of the editing and finetuning within C1).
And if I am having plenty of screen resources i.e. second monitor then I can have floating tools everywhere, saving even more clicks. -
UI and workflow consistency
An additional proofing viewer / browser and modal window breaks the general UI and workflow concept.
And the exporter it is not easier because a user has to become familiar with the normal Browser, Viewer, how to select variants, what a primary variant is, "Edit selected" icon etc., proof profile, proofing button ANYWAY, and if the same concept as with all other tools applies also to the output tools, this is much more CONSISTENT than having this again redundantly in a modal window.
Hence, the old way is easier than another and additional blocking window with its own viewer and browser with somewhat differing behavior. - Eye and brain strain: Every visual stimulus strains the eye but mainly the brain. That's one reason why I have enabled popup blockers and ad removal in my internet browser. If you are in a stressy editing session and oftentimes another window is popping up where visual elements change, these stimuli add up and you get tired and annoyed sooner.
- A modal window is so 90ish...
EDIT: Added "Eye and brain strain".

Export corrupting Images that are added to the initial Export queue.
I've just been through the exported images from last week and about to upload and have noticed that any images added to the export after the initial export has started and before it has finished are coming out corrupt!! I can see a mini preview, click once on it and it turns grey with a random grey pattern. I found this out after I tried exporting them again, the first couple of sets of exports where fine until I had a queue and added images from another folder, this then created corrupt images.
