Upgrading to CaptureOne and importing catalogs from MediaPro
I have one question, but it is q big one. I have 250,000+ digital photos organized into catalogs in Media Pro, which I have used for 17 years. It is no longer supported, and I cannot upgrade my Mac system any further without losing access to the descriptions with every one of those photos. I have not yet been able to figure out how to upgrade to CaptureOne and import all of those catalogs. It would be a dream come true if anyone can tell me how to do that. Thanks.

Do you have a sufficient number of catalogs in MP so that each catalog would not be too big for C1 with regards to performance?

I have a very large number of MP catalogs, maximum number of photos in one catalog around 18,000 but most considerably smaller. I could probably break up the largest ones, but I wonder if anyone has established a size limit.

And thanks for website on importing them. I tried once before and failed, was never sure why I couldn't do it,, but I'll try again. I have stopped upgrading my Mac systems at Mojave.

I run Windows, and never used MP. 18k images should not be problem I think.

Dennis Paulson, i like you have a similar problem regarding MP databases. Many are as large, if not larger than your 18,000 one. Has CaptureOne solved the issue? Can you import your databases? Any problems? Is it really worth the expense of the CaptureOne licence if you don't need the image processing side of the software. I've been looking for alternative, unsuccessfully, do you know of any that are just cataloging programmes like MediaPro? Sorry, lots of questions, hope you can advise. cheers, tony

Tony, I have not found anything yet to replace the Media Pro that I have used for so long and am so happy with. But I purchased Capture One and little by little am learning how to use it. Like you, I only needed the organizing part of it, as I'm equally happy with Photoshop. But I don't see that I have any choice, if I ever want to upgrade my Mac system beyond Mojave, the last one that will run MP. Capture One is complex, but there is an online manual, and from that I'm learning how to use it. You can readily import MP catalogs, but before you do so you should go to the Action menu on MP and Export Annotations to each catalog. That will bring in all the metadata (Photo Exif and IPTC), so it will be available in the Capture One catalog. Importing photo sets is complicated but learnable. Good luck!

I don't know the two Photo image organizers at all, but they look interesting. The question is whether they could import the Media Pro catalogs readily and keep the metadata with them. A friend with the same problem as I have looked at digiKam and wasn't impressed.

MP was said to be a very good catalog, that's not what many people say about C1.
For me C1 catalog suffices, and has the advantage that catalog, metadata, image adjustments, adjustments copy&paste to other images are all in the same app. But if you don't use the image adjustments of C1 it might be good to do some research and testing of other apps before making a decision.
Decent apps should have a xmp file support for the metadata (read and write the metadata of an image to a file) to exchange metadata with other apps. I assume MP can create xmp files. The devil is in the detail though, and I would do comprehensive testing with the target app prior a final decision.

One more question, BeO. Can I import Media Pro catalogs into either of these programs, or any other program besides Capture One?

If there is a function to directly import MP catalogs I don't know, probably not.
You have your image files on the file system, and you have metadata, keywords, ratings etc. added in MP. I guess you can export the metadata from MP into xmp files. And probably you can import the metadata from the xmp files into these programs.
With "besides" C1 you mean if you have also imported them into C1? I don't know the import function in C1 for MP catalogs, do you see the images in C1 in the folder section of the library tool, or in the collection "In Catalog"?

Hi Dennis and BeO, thanks for your replies and discussions. I have some updates having spent the whole of yesterday trying to solve the problem. I downloaded and tried both of the freebies DigiKam and Widsmob Viewer, They look ok, show metadata etc, but don't have a 'save catalogue' function as with MP and so each time the thumbnails need to be imported. So, non-runners for me. I also tried one of the popular DAM (Digital Asset Management) programmes, Canto, but that wants to COPY all the files onto a cloud-based directory. (I have my images on hard drives at present - about 20Tb worth! - that would take days to upload and besides, i don't want or need them in cloud storage). Now i've been looking at software that can run other legacy MacOS's or in fact Windows, on a Mac (currently running Monterey). I've loaded software called Parallels, in trial at present, into which i can supposedly load MacOS High Sierra, from which i can then load and run my old MP, also my old PS CS6 licence as well. But at present i've stalled on trying to get High Sierra loaded, it's a case of getting the right download to then put into Parallels.

I personally would avoid "one person shops" as it is only a matter of time when they (very likely) go out of maintenance. This can happen too with software provided by a somewhat bigger company (MP being an example) or with open-source projects, but less likely I think.

I also purchased Parallels and am looking at the same solution as you although I'm currently hanging on to High Sierra on my iMac.

Did you find that already? Maybe it will be the "right download" that you're looking for.
