Relinking into a catalog
I'm little confused and just can't find in all the information on the forum how to do what I need. I'm certain this is explicitly stated somewhere. I'm using a Mac.
I combined 4 catalogs into one by importing 3 catalogs. That's works fine.
However the catalog is now pointing to images in 4 different directories. I copied all the files from all the catalogs into one catalog (which happens to be where the new catalog lives).
How do I now tell the catalog to look in this new directory rather than the original ones?

...before giving you a wrong answer, since you use "catalog" and "directory" somewhat interchangeably could you please specify whether you actually changed the location of your source files using Apple's Finder by placing them all into a new directory (folder or hard drive).

Yes, I moved the photo files into the directory in which the .catalog file is located.
However the catalog is still looking at the original directory, not the new one.
I want the .catalog to see the photo files in their new location.

It looks like you used Finder to move the files, in which case Capture One doesn't know what you did and therefore can't find the files. If indeed this is the case, you'll have to Relocate your originals.
Here's what would/should have worked:
1. Import the other catalogs into the one you wanted. That would have brought all previews, metadata, adjustments, etc. into one catalog, and that catalog would point at your original images just as the other catalogs did. Then:
2. In Capture One, drag the image files to whatever location you want. That would have preserved Capture One's "knowledge" of file locations while putting things where you want them. Finder would have automatically been updated accordingly.
The key thing to remember is that Capture One doesn't know what you do in Finder, so all file moves that you want Capture One to be aware of—including making new folders and deleting old ones—MUST be done within Capture one.
If you feel adventuresome, you could (in Finder) move the files back to the original locations (where Capture One knew about them) and then go into Capture One and do Step 2 above. But try that ONLY if you are absolutely sure that you remember EXACTLY what you did when you moved the original files. Otherwise I'm afraid that you'll have to use Capture One's "Locate Originals" function, which could be tedious.

Well you made your life a little bit more complicated than it needed to be by moving files in the Finder rather than moving them from within C1.
Basically when you import several Catalogs into one big Catalog, but also want to consolidate all the corresponding source files into one directory you should do that in the Library tab in C1 directly, which will than move the files in the finder for you but also knows where they are.But it's not a big deal, All you need to do is to right click on each of the old folders or directories in the library tab under "folders" and select "locate" for that folder, after which you will be prompted to navigate to the new folder the missing files can be found in. if you previously had 10 folders but now only have one, you just have to repeat that procedure for all ten folders and in the end all that remains is the one you moved all the files to.
If you have moved folders with their subfolders to a new location (for instance a folder 2021 with the subfolders 1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,9,10,11, and 12) you only have to locate the top level folder (in this case 2021) and C1 will automatically locate all the files in the subfolders if indeed you haven't changed that organisational structure.Another thing I highly recommend is to take the time and look at some of the C1 webinars mainly by David Grover on the subject of Catalog organisation. They are fairly comprehensive and that hour of watching him explain will save you a lot of time afterwards.

I did as suggested but not sure I ended up with what I expected. Though I guess it's all the same.
I moved 3 directories into the catalog in the Library tag. I expected that all the files would be moved to the main directory. However C1 set up new subdirectories within the directory I thought I selected.
The problem may be that I previously copied the same files into that directory with Finder. I suppose I now need to delete the surplus files from the main directory.

A further question on catalogs.
I was using a catalog on an external drive, and it somehow got disconnected while C1 was open. I subsequently found a copy of the catalog on my hard drive. Is this a safety feature?
