I used Affinity and Gimp for softproofing (meanwhile they have added Affinity on their website, also discourage it), especially for out of gamut checking, but it actually does not make a big difference in the resulting print when compared to C1.

Much more important are a decent monitor, preferably calibrated, its brightness setting, white point setting (5000K - 6000K) and brightness (60-80 cd in a dark editing room, 100cd if your room is brighter).

As a beginner in printing I recommend you make experiences, softproof, then hardproof (do the print), adjust your setup and try again, don't spend too much money in the beginning until you get some confidence. This applies whatever software you use for softproofing.

As a beginner, set your monitor (or calibration profile) to sRGB, do the softproof with the ICC profile which you have downloaded (but send them jps in sRGB). Set rendering intent according to the specification provided by them. Saal uses D50 standardized light bulbs and a neutral environment to asses the print vs. their softproof (which is Photoshop I believe), and you most likely don't have a neutral environment and a D50 light, so decide for the light and viewing condition you will judge the print against the softproof.

You will see deviations to your softproof, mainly slightly cool vs. warm white balance, as well as contrast and brightness (because monitors are illuminated from behind, but prints are reflecting the light you shine on it). Adjust your monitor if needed, your image while softproofing (new variant), let them print again, compare the result when it's in your hands under the same light and viewing conditions as before.

Some say that printing is an art by itself. And this wouldn't be said if a simple soft-proof button would always show you how the final print looks like. So be patient with yourself (and the printing service :-)

I also suggest to read more on this topic in the web to understand the process and identify key pit falls.

My reply has been hold off by the AI filter of this forum (don't know what is wrong with the text), and I don't know when a C1 admin will approve it during Christmas days.

The short answer is, you can use C1 with Saal-DIgital (I do), there are other, more important factors, and experience you will need. I think the admins will approve my post so stay tuned.
