Does it really matter which number it says?

I mean if the update brought some improvements (especially for people using M1), does it really matter whether they change the number of the Engine?

Regarding the 15.2 update, copied from the Rawcaptureguide website:

One word of caution if you are running on a busy production with tight deadlines: all of the image adjustments done in the new Capture One 22 (15.2) version cannot be read by earlier versions – even if you are using a Session. In other words: You cannot backport your work in case the new 15.2 release doesn’t play nice with your system

Are you sure about that? Same engine should mean it's backwards compatible.

Of course when you upgrade the Session file it will not be usable with older versions but the photos and edits themselves... well they should still work.

Not from personal experience but the caution was clearly noted in an email I received from rawcaptureguide@creators.gumroad.com, the publishers of the revised Capture One 22 (15.2) User's Guide.

I'd try to verify that before warning other people about it.

Actually I do think that 'major' upgrades--not free upgrades; should include an upgrade to the 'engine'. The engine is a major part of how CP1 handles files. Think of it as going from Monterey to Big Sur. Files are backwards compatible. If all they are doing is filling in software; then why ask us to purchase a new 'system'?

Up until 2021; new releases generally included an update to the engine. CP1 21 used the CP1 20 engine.

For instance, Nikon's Z6/Z7 cameras have had software upgrades..at no cost. You want better 'focusing' and other features not available on the Z6/Z7...upgrade to a new camera....Z6ii/Z7ii. And other free software upgrades. Wouldn't make sense to buy the new camera unless the processor was different and offered better and new features. Same as with the Z9. I'm looking for CP1 to include features that PS and others have when they offer a buy only upgrade. Don't you think that if all it took was software updates to do better de-noise and picture combinations (overlays) that CP1 would have done it by now?

again: Whether they change a number in the engine or not does not matter.

They could change it to 22 and not let you edit those files with CP1v20. Would that be better or worse?

If the framework is being updated/upgraded/overhauled and this allows better performance and more features - why is that a bad thing?

Your concern about not being able to edit CP12v20 files in a 'new' 22 does not seem to be a real concern..of mine. CP1 has always allowed you to update the older files/catalogs when they release a new version. In fact they tell you now to update earlier 'versions' of files to CP1 8 before trying to upgrade them to 22. I have continually upgraded to take advantage of improvements and none of my files have been left behind.

Better performance and features are all good. If they can do it with changing their 'processor' then do it for free. If they are making major changes....bill me and I'm ok with that.

Errr I hope you are aware that the raw processing engine ist just once piece of the puzzle.

You're paying for the whole software, not just the raw engine. That includes compatibility with current hardware and new gear, performance improvements and improvements regarding tools etc.

It does not matter whether those things are achieved with a new RAW engine or by improvements to the framework. It's still work done by their software engineers - and they still deserve to get paid.

Don't get me wrong, I'm a harsh critic of a lot of the practises and schemes that CaptureOne is known for. But this is absolutely justified. You never paid for more than updates to the current version (which is supported for 1 year), after that you had to upgrade to the new version. That sucks but that's the way it has always been.

If you want to wait for a new engine for whatever reason...well... you're welcome to do it. But you can't expect them to work on other improvements for free.
