Clarifications on the removal of the brand-specific versions
Hello everyone.
There seems to be quite a bit of confusion regarding the simplification (the irony) of the Capture One line-up.
Users who bought brand-specific software before Jan. 18th are eligible for an upgrade to non-branded Pro. Brand-specific versions are said to no longer be offered since that date anyway. However, I purchased the Sony version from B&H Photo after that date, which supposedly makes me ineligible for said upgrade. I'd like to add that nothing informs the buyer of this entire situation on the product page. It certainly feels like some people are being misled.
So, two questions:
- How come the brand-specific software is still offered (I just checked B&H) for sale despite Capture One support website stating that Jan. 18th was its death knell?
- Why make a difference between people who bought the software before and after Jan. 18th? The fact that Capture One's support note makes a difference between pre- and post-Jan. 18th buyers strongly suggests Capture One knew the software would still be offered for sale after the date, which is at best dishonest. I purchased the software after months of research between Adobe CC and C1; there was no indication that such changes were coming up. I just happened to buy the software on Jan. 19th.
To add insult to injury, as of tonight, B&H is offering C1 Pro 22 non-branded for $20 cheaper than any of the branded versions. Something is seriously wrong here.
Clarifications, as I said, would be very welcome.
Thank you for your time and patience in helping me/us see more clearly through what is going on with this matter.
Regards,
Guillaume

You really need to be asking B &H about this. Capture One's been completely clear about its own position.

Thank you for contributing Keith. I completely agree. I have also reached out to B&H about this matter. I wouldn't go as far as saying C1 has been completely clear, as it is still up to them to decide where and if their products are retailed and ensure policy consistency across sales channels. That said, your point is a good one regarding B&H. I will update this thread with info I can obtain from them. 👍

It appears I was correct to post my concerns on here. Please find B&H's response attached.
Any Capture One representative would like to step in on this?

Guillaume,
If you can get the full functionality of C1 Pro for less then the discontued "branded " version, why would you want to buy the Branded (i.e. Camera manufacturere limited) version?
Personally I don't see any logic in the B&H response you have posted. That position, when they know what the situation is, seems unhelpful and confusing for clients like yourself. And unnecessary.
Maybe it would be easier to order directly from C1?

Hi SFA,
Thank you for contributing. I share your conclusion. Buying directly from C1 seems to be the most advisable route for a new buyer. However, and unfortunately, I am no longer in a position to buy the software for a second time as I already purchased a branded version on Jan. 19th. This was a large expense for me (which, purely from a software standpoint, I do not regret in any way).
The next step for me might be to draw the attention from someone over at C1 directly. At any rate, thank you for commenting on this thread. Your time and thoughts are very appreciated.
Kind regards.

Pardon the possible obvious: are you indeed not able to upgrade? Did you try and fail / got rejected?
Could it not be the case shops already had old stock of the branded versions which were purchased from C1 (by the shops) well before Jan 18th? Does it then matter that you buy this license from said shop after Jan 18th? Or is it in actuality not about license purchase date, but activation date?

Oh, have Capture One changed their busniess model? Let me almost wonder if they will change ever from license to subscription only too…
@Capture One, please let me know, if there are any plans. Then I stay with Lightroom and get a (not so loved) subscription and don't have to waste time to migrate with all my catalogs…

Hi Propheticus,
I am able to provide an update. After contacting CaptureOne's customer service, the very nice people there did allow me to upgrade, but they also made it clear that it was done as an exception (whether this is true or not is impossible for me to verify).
Here is the part I can quote from their email that gives the best clarifications:
"Please, be informed that resellers preserve the right to run their own discount campaigns, different from the ones that are offered in the official web-store of Capture One.
When we officially announced the removal of brand versions on January 18, 2022, some resellers still had those in store without agreeing with us.
However, we have decided to make an exception for you and grant a free upgrade to Capture One Pro 22 anyway."It seems that some kind of conflict may be going on between C1 and B&H, if I go by what is written here. I hope this helps, Propheticus.

Good to hear it worked out for you!
Luckily I had no such issues because I bought my branded version late 2021, well before jan 18th '22.It does sound a bit strange shops are still able/allowed to sell versions of software that are essentially end of life / unsupported going forward.
