Beware of ex-fat external drives on Mac.
I have a Windows film scanner, but I move my files over to my iMac to edit in Capture One. Recently the ex-fat external drive I was using began to have problems with writing files or ejecting itself in the middle of a work session. I purchased another drive and it worked fine for awhile, but then it too started to randomly disappear during editing sessions and on one iMac it would cause a kernel panic and I would have to completely restart my computer. I started do some research online and it seems ex-fat drives can be prone to corruption particularly in a Windows/Mac environment. So I reformatted the drive as NTFS, bought NTFS for Mac and everything is working great. I actually think Capture One runs a little faster, particularly with large files.

Haven't had an issue like that myself with ex-fat but will reformat to NTFS to avoid it happening to me. Thank you for the heads up. (now where to store 3TB of photos... temporarily.)

I just stumbled across this. After checking, yes indeed my 5Tb external drive is definitely ExFAT formatted :( .
Well, just like Cory, I'll have to move files to a temporary storage, then reformat. Dang it!! But thanks a lot Max (OP) for the heads-up on the issue!!
