Both is possible. What is more convenient for scenario with external hard drive?

I am not providing an answer or advice here, I asked because I believe you should disclose that kind of information with you question. When using catalogs, Capture One offers two methods for the image repository (embedded or referenced). And your intend to use "both", right? Let's hope someone else will chime in with the best advice.

I use catalogs and I store my files and their xml, outside of the catalog. For the best performance, I use an internal hard drive for the recent photos and then I move them to another hard drive. If you open C1 and the image you are editing has been moved or is missing then you will only see the thumbnail in C1 and it will flag the image as missing.
It is easy enough to "Locate..." drop down menu to tell C1 to go and find them. But everything you disconnected the drive? hmmm...Let me share how I move directories that have been edited and stored on the hard drive:
Outside C1:
1) Copy the existing directory (2022, 2021, etc) over to another drive.
2) rename the existing directory so C1 says that all the files are missing when you go into the catalog in C1Inside C1:
Use the locate (right click) function to show C1 where the files are now (new drive location)
It should find all the files. With perhaps some trial and errorDO NOT DO THIS:
Inside C1:
Use the move function to move the files to the new drive. That will lose all of the editing you have done on the files.-1
