Exploitive Upgrade Pricing V.22 to V.23
This is a significant fubar or death wish on Capture One's part. As a Capture One user since Version 4 or 5, I feel insulted being asked to pay more for my upgrade than a new user pays for their first license with styles, as I went into my account to upgrade from version 22 to version 23.
I was traveling and missed the pre-release promotion by less than 24 hours; I tried to update my license with the e-mail link, but the price had changed, so I downloaded the v.23 trial expecting to upgrade on Black Friday for the standard upgrade package with no styles. I kept going to my account, thinking I was getting the wrong link, before realizing I was screwed because I already owned most, if not all, of the Capture One Styles and other style packages. The following is copied from Capture One:
Base Characteristics ^ ^ ICC Profile From File (Adobe RGB (1998)) Curve Auto v Engine Capture One 20/21 v Styles and Presets * * * " • • / TS - Time Traveler / 26. CL - Pastel Fade Overridden
v Custom Styles > B&W (v11) > BEYOND B&W> BEYOND FILM> CINEMATIC (v11) > Color Shift Styles > EDITORIAL BY MARIE BAERSCH> EDITORIAL BY MICHAEL WOLOSZYNOWICZ> EDITORIAL BY PRATIK NAIK> FILM (v11) > INFINITE PEAKS BY BRYAN MINEAR> LATITUDE - DEEP FOREST> LATITUDE - SUNBOUND> MATTE (v11) > Mixology 1.1 > NORDIC EDITORIAL> NORDIC LIFESTYLE> PACIFIC BY JOHN SCHELL> Pro Color Grading Styles > Ready Looks > Reverie by Lukas Piatek > SEASONAL (v11) v Built-in Styles > IQ Styles > LEGACY> SPRING> Built-in Presets
The packages offered to long-time Capture One Users like me are a travesty at best and a slap in the face at worst. Capture One has violated its stated upgrade policy if this pricing is not a significant error. If I sound ticked off, please move it up a notch to understand how disappointed I am in Capture One's upgrade pricing.

I just found the same. The upgrade price shown in my account is the same as the regular license price. And in the regular price description they even state there is reduced pricing for upgrades. Clearly not the case.

Thank you all for your comments. If this is not an error, it needs to be corrected with a personal note to all the users who endeavored to upgrade. I have a computer full of editing tools, so this is not a significant calamity for my editing processes. My misfortune is that for years I've shared the benefits of Capture One's superb import engine, editing speed, easy layer controls, color controls, and live capture capabilities with professionals and serious enthusiasts with user groups here in Atlanta. Many of my friends cannot afford to own many editing tools, making this a severe issue if this upgrade pricing is not a mistake. I am unhappy and disappointed about the possibility of handing out "mea culpa(s)" to my friends after encouraging them to use Capture One. In the south, we have an old expression that has stood against the test of time: Pigs get fat, and hogs get slaughtered. I have posted the original post to Facebook and Twitter and will put it on Instagram if we do not see something here soon from Capture One.

Same experience and feelings here. There is no benefit in being a pre-existing user, rather are punished for not being an annual subscriber. Ironically it was for these kinds of shady practices that I switched from Adobe in the first place.
Note that "Reduced price every time you upgrade if you have a license" is simply not true.
From the site, for new users:
179.00- One-time payment to own a license for Capture One Pro 23 and use all its powerful features and tools
- Reduced price every time you upgrade if you have a license
Also from the site, for existing users:
-
Your price
$199.00Upgrade

Capture One is not a charity, it doesn't want to be your friend, and it owes you nothing except software that works.
If you don't like what's on offer, go somewhere else.

Keith, I understand, but it's a thread about users feeling they are being priced out of upgrading the software they love because they feel they have to buy the software all over again for an incremental upgrade. It's perfectly reasonable to express that to Capture One/Silver Fleet via the forum, and to share that frustration with others, as that's what the forum is for. If you only want to hear the positive stuff then maybe don't dive into such a thread?
As for me, I purchased the software (just) before the submission to the subscription format, and in part because of the subscription format forced upon Adobe users, so yea, there is some frustration that I was just buying into the thing I wanted to get away from. That's just bad luck and I get that.
SFA, what you say is level headed, and no doubt I'm whining, but there's no joy buying a new license, or now buying into subscriptions, thx to the 518 Euros that I've already spent on C1.
I believe it's ok to voice to the community why you will not upgrade.

I don't disagree with you and I appreciate the thoughtful response.
Honestly I've never been so tempted to buy into the subscription model, if only switching to a subscription didn't deactivate your existing license key. Still I'm confused by what I see, switching/upgrading to a subscription would cost me 179, while signing up fresh would cost me 108? Am I reading that right?

I've reviewed my process flow to avoid financially supporting Capture One's illogical market strategy. I highly value Capture One's import engine and tethering capabilities, but I do most of my portrait editing in Adobe PS. I have been going from Capture One straight to Photoshop, but discovered the best workflow for me, regardless of the upgrade/new customer/bundle pricing fiasco, is Camera to Aftershoot to Capture One to Lightroom to Photoshop. AfterShoot is an AI for culling.
Lightroom's AI and built-in presets do everything I want before implementing healing, dodging and burning, eyes, teeth, skin tone, skin mask, and enhancing the portrait's depth. I do eighty-five percent of this now using Adobe and third-party Ai plugins. I am pleasantly surprised with Lightroom's auto-AI consistency with different light and stage setups for grading images from the same shoot with only minor tweaks, which is fast.
My objection to the Black Friday sale, which is still the same today, on Cyber Monday, is Capture One's lack of respect and flawed judgment. Charging existing customers more for a minor upgrade than repurchasing the complete program is insulting. Nevertheless, I owe Capture One a thank you for compelling me to review my workflow with my existing software.

PS, I like companies that make money because they can invest in improving their products. Decisions like Capture One made this week can easily lead to reduced followership and therefore reduced revenue which translates to less profit and less money for product development. I would not have made the original post if didn't want Capture One to be successful. Posts take time. I only give feedback to vendors I care about.

Perhaps they jumped the gun a bit with their upgrade pricing.
received this mailing today:From 2023 we will no longer be tied to an annual cycle for major releases. As a result, there will not be a Capture One 24. Instead, we will continuously release new tools and features on a rolling basis throughout the year.
Alongside this, we will also be making changes to our perpetual licenses from February 1, 2023. Here’s what’s changing:-
New perpetual licenses will include updates with bug fixes until the next version, but new features released after purchase will not be included.
-
Upgrade pricing will no longer be available and will be replaced with a new loyalty scheme. More details will be announced on February 1, 2023.

Mathieu D. - Thank you for the heads up. Black Friday may have been the perfect time to implement this kind of program. Meanwhile, all of the new Capture One owners were promised a program that may not exist. It is hard to know what they will do based on their e-mail's wording. Regardless, I am pulling for them to get whatever they do right because I have a lot of my time and money invested in Capture One's success.

C1-21 user had to do the upgrade to C1-23 as no longer supported my new camera, did the trial 1st to make sure was stable etc etc. did this last day of Jan23 and had to have C1 supports help with the license issue, all was fine and went in today as was reminded had 7 days left on the trial... low and behold C1 at it again as of feb14th changed again pricing, NO LONGER get 33% off your upgrade, have to buy a new license and get a loyalty discount of 20%. Not a mention of this from support when sent a query ref the license at the beginning of February. I understand things change and if value a product then need to pay but I'm questioning whether they actually value us as customers. I mean I pay £10 a month for adobe PS and LR and I'm now questioning do I really need C1 and all the lack of support they give to their client base. a few versions ago I do think C1 gave a better result than LR but it is so so close now even if anything and even the tethering is not far behind. Sorry C1 but you really don't help yourself. And to add so little difference apart from a few minor details from C1-21 and C1-23 and call it a new version.
