the images I have saved have really bad artifacts that cover most of the image. This happens a lot in different ways. the image is unusable. very unhappy with it.

This is often a video driver issue. Try updating the video drivers and if you have a Nvidia card, see if they offer "Studio" drivers which are designed for image editing rather than gaming.

A frequent fix for this type of issue is to turn OFF hardware acceleration - find it under preferences.
