I agree that it could be related to an issue with Mac OS. Since the problem only occurred recently and I have found no issue with the Select arrow in any other tool, it could very well be a bug.

As a follow up to this issue. I have found that I needed to disable hardware acceleration for screen display in order to keep from getting a lockup. Thanks to Eric for finding this solution.
