The dates menu should be accesible, i don't think it can be activated somewhere in a menu.
You best log a support call for this.

PhaseOne support now tells me that the Dates format preference (short vs long) is a "Windows only" feature. They say that this fact is stated in the EM manual. I couldn't find an EM manual. The only manual I have is the iView Media Pro 3 manual, which clearly shows this feature as being active for the Mac (the sample screenshot is a Mac OS dialog window).

Does anyone know why this feature would have become "Windows only" in EM after being cross platform in iView?

Also, is anyone aware of a full EM2 manual? (The only EM documentation I'm aware of is the Quick Start Guide and the Help section within the application.)

Hello,

Expression Media's user guide is available as a help file, installed with the app. Just go to the help menu. It's indexed and searchable.

At Microsoft you can get a PDF of the previous version of Expression Media:

This is getting confusing. Phase One tech support referred me (perhaps mistakenly) to the EM Reader user guide, which says on p. 4:

"Dates - Determine how the date displays in the views. If you choose Long, the date
format will be Friday, April 16, 2006. If you choose Short, the format will read
4/16/06. If you choose Abbreviated, the format will read Fri, Apr 16, 2006
(Windows only)[/color:cgltqip2]."

The link Roelof posted (thanks, Roelof) is the true EM user guide. But this guide clearly states on page 19:

"Dates - Determine how the date displays in the views. If you choose Long, the date
format will be Friday, April 16, 2006. If you choose Short, the format will read
4/16/06. If you choose Abbreviated, the format will read Fri, Apr 16, 2006
(Macintosh)[/color:cgltqip2]."

So this contradicts Phase One's original claim that the feature is Windows only.

This remains an unresolved mystery.

The information you have listed above is from the Expression Media 1 and is not entirely applicable to Expression Media 2.
The date option you are looking for is only available for Windows as outlined in the Expression Media 2 User Guide.

Two follow-up questions:

1. It seems strange that this feature would be disabled between version 1 and version 2 but, strange at it seems, if it's true I'll accept it. Will Phase One restore the feature for Macs in the next version of the software?

2. Where do I find the Expression Media 2 User Guide? It's not available on the Phase One site. Phase One has only three EM documentation downloads: 1) release notes for Windows; 2) the EM2 "Overview guide" (a brief document, not a full user guide) and 3) the EM2 Reader User Guide (not the user guide for the actual EM2 application). And the links to the old Microsoft pages are broken.

Hello,
The Expression Media's user guide is copied to your computer when the program is installed. You can open it in two ways:
1 -> Start Expression Media > Open 'Help' in the Menubar > Open 'Expression Media Help'.
2 -> I don't know the exact location of the help file on Mac but on 64 bit windows 7 it is 'C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft Expression\Media 2\en'. The file is called Media.chm. I placed a copy of the file here for your convenience:

Roelof,

Yes, I am aware of the "Help" documentation. But the "Help" documentation includes no information about the Dates format setting (at least not in the Mac version of Help). In fact, the section called "Setting Preferences" describes all the general preferences except Dates, which is conspicuously absent, even though the Dates field is part of the Mac preference window (although it is grayed out).

I am not able to view your Windows file on my Mac. Can you check this... On your Windows version, does your Help documentation include information about "Dates"?

Yes, the help file does mention 'date format' under general preferences.
See

Btw, documentation in .chm format should be opened on Max with Chmox , CHM Viewer or Xchm.

Thanks, Roelof. This confirms that Microsoft apparently disabled the Dates format preference for Macintosh when it created EM2. I've asked Phase One to restore the feature in their next Mac version of the software if possible.
